Studies have shown that even major athletes only utilize an average of 3.5
ounces of protein, which is easily met. For example steak is roughly 22% protein so a 16 ounce steak would pretty much satisfy the daily protein need.
When I used to race triathlons and did cross country bicycling my diet consisted of almost entirely pasta and rice and I had more energy than I knew what to do with. If I started eating meat my energy levels would drop DRASTICALLY after about 3 days. Meats just provide more garbage for your body to deal with. I am not against eating meats. I just think their intake needs to be limited.
So the average person, athlete or not, healing or not, pregnant or not is going to get more than enough protein in their daily diet. And taking extra is not going to provide any benefits. It is going to be eliminated just like most excess vitamins. And the body is going to have to spend a lot of extra energy doing this.
As far as amino acid balance goes, this is what varied diets are all about. If you eat only one thing all the time, such as corn, then you will eventually develop a deficiency. We eat a variety of foods though which provide us with a broad range of amino acids, some of which are used by the body to form other amino acids.
