I'm new to cure zone and just saw this. I'm not sure if the original poster is still active or not, but I just want to say that I am a victim of Chiropractic Stroke. Let me back up and say I am all for alternative care. I saw my regular chiropractor for over 14 years with no problem, I used a midwife and had my kids at home, I've had acupuncture and take homeopathic medicine. I was 31 when it happened to me with a 13mo old baby that I was breastfeeding at the time and a 3 year old.
My chiropractor was getting ready to retire, so I found a new chiropractor that my insurance covered, they were close by, and had a nice website. My very first appointment with them I had a consultation, x-rays, and exam. He then did a few adjustments on my back, then had me lay on my back to adjust my neck. He did the neck adjustment and intense pain went through my whole body. He didn't realize anything was wrong and wanted to continue, but I knew I needed a break so I asked if I could have some water. I tried to sit up but kept leaning to to the side. I couldn't swallow and could hardly talk. The pain was intense and they called 911. I left their office in an ambulance. I want to a hospital and they did an CT scan and confirmed that I had had a stroke. I was transferred to a specialty hospital and stayed there for 9 days. I had to relearn how to walk, talk, and eat. I had to immediately wean my baby because of all the medications. My right side is completely numb but thankfully I have full mobility. I suffer from fatigue daily which is a difficult thing to deal with when you have a now 2 & 4 year old child to take care of.
The chiropractor was relatively new (only 1 year practicing unbeknownst to me) and he ended up tearing an artery, which clotted and caused the stroke very suddenly. I am lucky. It could have been a partial tear, that could have torn and clotted while I was driving (looking over shoulder) several hours or days after the adjustment and could have ended up having a stroke while driving (possibly with my kid in the car).
I am all for alternative care and chiropractic but please, be VERY careful with your necks!
