My ears have always had a kind of 'dry' waxy material, inside.
At various times I've noticed 'dry flakes' and what they call an 'ear bean', which is a small pellet of wax...they seem to just fall out of the ear canal, sometimes.
Poking a finger inside the ear canal, or even a Q-Tip, is NOT smart!
Those admonitions when were young...to never put anything smaller than your elbow into your ear, were absolutely right!
We hear by the waving of tiny hairs on the insides of our ear canals, and we disturb those hairs at peril of diminished hearing!
Also, even the smallest amount of irritation, scratching, and the like, makes my ears itch inside. It's a vicious cycle...an itch, scratch, more itching.
Well, I had my baby finger in one ear one day, because that fingernail had grown a bit and might be able to pull out some flakes or something that was bothering me.
Instead, it caught on the edge of something hard and flat. I could kind of 'snap' it. A minute or two later I pulled out a piece of a 'coating' from one side of the ear canal.
Instantly, I could hear better in that ear.
It seems that my ears are prone to build up this coating of old wax and perhaps dust, etc.
Now I'm thinking that it would be better to soften and loosen the coating with, say, a drop or two of warm olive oil in one ear at a time, and irrigate after a while with warm water...to gently flush out anything that might be in there.
I now am very careful not to put anything in there...I simply press a bit from the outside, if I feel an itch.
I'm so glad your doctor found a way to wash out your ears, Joe.
I think I'd be very happy to let the doctors take care of the problem.
My best,
