I planted several squash type plants this year and they are blooming but no fruits...I am not sure what to make of this...I have noticed that I haven't seen any bees/wasps this year like I usually do. Wondered if it could be because they aren't polinated, and maybe I have to hand polinate, and if so how would I do that just snip one pollen stem tape it to a stick and go around touching the other stamens...- Re: zuchini Schlüggell

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,218,438You could try hand-pollinating - Though they are bee/insect polinated.
Curcubitaceae plants will cross-pollinate within same species - So if your Zucchini & Squash are all C. pepo types they will cross & not breed true next year if you save the seed.
Generally each stalk/vine/branch produces Male & Female flowers that you would swab.
The trick is the timing of when the blossoms are fertile - You would have to research this - THere are several seed-saving books available.- Re: zuchini Jimsgirl

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,220,024My zucchini's are blooming but the leaves are dying and then the stalk is rotting. I tried cutting off some of the big leaves to get some light to the plant but I have only gotten a couple of zucchs off and 2 plants have just rotted.
Don't know why, but next year I will put them in a big pot all by themselves and let them spread all over the place.
Any thoughts on why they are not producing?

This is a reply to # 1,218,438I have wondered about the hand pollenation myself, but don't know so I would be interested in the info as well. Fortunately we seem to have plenty of all different kinds of bees here in my area of middle Tenn.
We planted zukes and yellow squash. We have gotten a good harvest out of them. After we picked off one batch, they started flowering again, at the tips of the little fruits. I looked down in them one day and saw little bees crawling around all inside the flowers! I started hollering "bees! bees! I was elated to see them.

This is a reply to # 1,220,227My mother-in-law has had a garden every year for years- she's 82. I told her I was getting little zucchini that would shrivel up and die and fall off, and she told me to hand pollenate them.
Take the "male" blossom when it opens, the one that has one stem in the middle, and pluck off the whole blossom. Peel back the pedals of the blossom, and touch the male stem that has the pollen on it, to the center of any female blossoms you find open.
I haven't seen any bees around..and we grow alfalfa in a field right next to where our garden(s) are planted.
