Yellow Gunk in Dogs' Eyes

I have 2 Shelties. Both dogs' eyes are accumulating yellow gunk in the corners. We keep cleaning it out but it keeps coming back. My breeder said to use Terramycin Opthalmic ointment, but I'm a little leery of putting something in their eyes. Has anyone ever used this stuff, is it safe and is there a natural alternative?

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,208,693One of my dogs recently had the same thing in her right eye. I took a cotton ball soaked in c silver,squeezed it on to her eye and the gunk wet away in about 2 days.

This is a reply to # 1,208,707This may be a little bit far fetched but I also would try some Iodine in the food or drinking water. I like CS and Iodine in general for my dog because it has worked for me.
Read at the bottom of the link about the UB meridian, of course they are talking about humans but who knows it might help for dogs too. When we ever get a new dog I think I would supplement with some iodine, I keep reading how many dogs go blind and I would like to use Iodine as prevention.

This is a reply to # 1,209,407Yes I give my dogs a tab of Relentless Iodine a couple of times a week. My old crippled one gets a ounce or 2 of cs 3 or 4 times a week. I also give them a scoop of k9 show stopper each day. It has a little Iodine in it, plus a lot of other vit. and minerals.

Take a tablespoon of the eyebright and 1/8 of a teaspoon of the goldenseal and cover with about 2 ozs of boiling water. Let this stand for 5 to 10 minutes. Strain the herbs out of the mixture and allow to cool. With a dropper, put 1 to 3 drops in each eye, three to four times a day.
This solution must be made fresh daily, but can be used indefinitely, until the eye problem has cleared up.

In one post, I talk about balsam pear. Ms Outlaw was the only one I knew of that made a poultice with balsam pear. I have seen amazing results when she applied it on a person that had such a severe case of psoriasis, his arms looked like elephant skin.
I'm sure the formula must be older her. She also made a poultice by pickling balsam pear in a mild Turpentine formula.

This is a reply to # 1,208,693I have used it. It was an anti-biotic. I starting using dabs of honey instead. Honey is a natural anti-biotic and the pet likes it better than that cream.Clean the eye of gunk. Then just dab a tiny bit (BB size) in the corner of the eye in the pink park and then wipe backwards with a clean warm wetted cloth.It cleans off any that may have gooped outside and spreads it back into the eye to treat.Only use the surface of the cloth for one swipe and then get a fresh one. (it takes 2-4 wipes)

This is a reply to # 1,208,693It depends on their diets. If you give too much table food they will get that gunk. It's the same gunk we humans get in our eyes when we wake up in the morning. I think diet plays a big role.
