I was helping a co-worker one day this week, sitting at her desk. On her desk were open family sized bags and wrappers of pretzels, Cheetos, a micro waved meal for lunch, microwave popcorn, chips, coffee with cream and sugar, three empty soda bottles (one still looked cold) and lots of different kinds of candy, in various bags and jars etc. Fresh crumbs were abundant with the inevitable yuck all over the place including inside the keyboard, which, due to my job I have to touch; ewwwww! All the while I am working she talked to her brother about giving him some of her prescription pain pills for his back (he said he could not walk; these are early 30s something people) and how he should not take the steroids the doctor gave him for more than a week or two cause it would make him fat. She is twice my size and I am not tiny AND 50 years old.
It was everything I could do to keep myself from standing up and giving her a 2 hour lecture on how she was killing herself. I run into this time and time again every day at work and I can hardly stand to be in the same room due to the smells... and we didn't even get to the lighting and ventilation.
I have had some weak moments this week, and I suspect I was meant to sit there as a reminder to hold my ground and resolve... it helped some, but it also made me feel that I live in another dimension. I am constantly told I do not live in the "real" world when I feel mine is the real one, theirs is a manmade manufactured world designed to obscure the truth kind of like ancient Rome using the entertainment of the Coliseum, theater and like venues to hide what the government does through distraction of the masses.
