I'm hoping someone else from a public school can offer some help, advise, pearls of wisdom...
I am a counselor and teacher at a public middle school in a large urban district. Large minority population and the area is extremely poor. So, with the background out of the way...here is my question. I was walking around at lunch, just out for a bit of quiet / alone time. I saw a group of kids I know grouped together, with that look of "let's get ready to fight." One of them saw me and walked up, just to say hi. I was nice, chatted for a few moments, then she walked back to the group. Since I was walking in the area, they took a small walk to a semi secluded spot, yet still where I could see them. Since I had that feeling, I started to walk towards them as 2 started to fight. I told them to knock it off and go eat / leave the area. They did quickly.
The next day, I had 2 of the girls involved, along with my class and a few others gathered in a group to discuss fights, violence in general...things like that. MY first question I asked was, what did the group think I should have done? Was I right in stopping it or should I have let it continue? All agreed I should have stopped it, they were ok with that. When I asked them how they would have felt if I had seen it and just walked away, I was caught by surprise. My more violent of the girls said she had respect for me and that a teacher should make sure kids are safe. What then caught me more off guard was the response from half of the group. The kids like me, yet thought it would have been better if I had left, let the fight continue. When I asked how they could respect someone like that, especially if someone got really hurt, even by accident, a lucky punch, etc. They said, well...that is what happens...no big deal.
When I told them that I know of teachers at my school who do nothing, and when I was in school, we knew of teachers the same way, who just walked away from things, these were and are the teachers no one trusted or respected.
So I'm wondering how other teachers, people involved in schools, or even students, what are your feelings? How should a teacher react?

(No...I am not 'stalking' you...but I am seeing something I must tell you.)
Among the students involved in the event and discussion you describe...you now have an understanding none can ignore.
Never again could that situation repeat itself without everyone having a little smile, first, no matter what happens next.
You HAVE effectively reached those students, and probably many more.
More than that, you could take your post, above, to any meeting of educators and start a lively discussion. I think, at the very least, you would get pats on the back for your wisdom.
Teachers who don't act, walk away only because they don't know what to do.
They are, essentially, asking the same questions you are asking here.
I'm not a teacher, officially, but I've been around kids, and was one, once, myself.
I think you are missing that you already ARE effective...and maybe know it deep in your heart...and need a place to talk about it with your peers.
The answer is to play each situation by ear, based only on your good intentions and understanding of the 'rules', the code of the school system.
Perhaps some teachers, more than any others in society, are hitting the nail squarely on the head...right on.
Can you gather your posts, and any other writings you have, and share them with a Saturday/Sunday Noon Lunch group?
Or, with neighborhood parents, or your best friends?
Join an authors' association. They'll be amazed at the book of your life and experiences and questions you are writing...some will help you. All will cheer at your publishing success. ...Even if you self-publish in tiny installments.

You are at exactly the right spot, for the whole world...we all want to know what to do, except that you are coming up with solutions...ones that are not written in books.
They should be.

This is a reply to # 1,157,242Hi, I am not a teacher, but would like to put my views forward.
There should not be any question of teachers stopping,discouraging, breaking up potential or underway fights.
Remember, it is your Duty of Care, as a teacher. You are there, you are employed in the interests of the pupils. Parents enrolled their children there, because they've put their trust into the teachers. Your duty is to protect, nurture, educate these young people. If you did not, you are not deserving of your job. No offence, your post, question make no sense to me. It sounds as if you want a pat on your back for breaking up the fight, than discussing it with pupils.
You are employed to break up, discourage fights, not to mention one can safely assume, it would be against school policy to have a fight take place on school premises.
