i went to an optomotrist on 4/8/08. when he did glaucoma pressure test, my pressure was 20. i was told normal is btwn 18 and 22
. when he checked nerves in back of my eyes, he said they looked slightly assymetrical, but healthy. in the past there was no assymetry. i was told assymetry of optic nerves can be a sign of glaucoma. i was referred to opthalmologist. he said pressure was 20 also and also saw assymetry of optic nerves. the right nerve is more cupped, but slightly. i have absolutely no symptoms or vision problems. opthalmologist said that because i have one relative who is a great aunt that had glaucoma, and the pressure of 20 even tho it falls in the normal range, but high normal and the slightly cupped nerve puts me at a 60 percent chance for having glaucoma and 40 percent for not having it. in yrs past tho i have had pressure readings of 21 and 23, with no cupped nerve, and obviously still the great aunt with the glaucoma, but i didnt have it then with a higher pressure reading. i would like to know if anyone has any knowledge of glaucoma, and if there is ANY other reason for assymetric optic nerves other than glaucoma. i am going back to opthalmologist on 4/15/08 for further tests. he said if had glaucoma it is very early stage which is good, and that it is very treatable. please tell me if there is ANY other reason for assyemetry other than glaucoma if you know or please refer to me to a site i could find more info. please respond asap, as i am nervous wreck. i am right now on 2mg of xanax just to keep from trembling. thank you.
