I was surprised when I found this forum and began reading through the threads.
It appears that there is a large contingent of posters who believe that glutathione is best taken as a supplement on it's own.
But research has shown indisputably that glutathione, whether taken orally or intravenously is about as effective in raising glutathione as eating brains is for raising your IQ.
Glutathione is an integral part of the immune system, and as more research is published, it is growing more apparent than ever that it is vital in virtually every biochemical process in the body, encompassing everything from respiration to metabolism to nutrient absorption.
The best method of increasing your body's glutathione is to provide the precursors. Namely, cysteine. NAC is used routinely in emergency rooms to rapidly detoxify overdoses of acetaminophen and other drugs. It carries some nasty side effects, and recent findings have shown it to have potential harmful long term effects.
NAC ramps up your glutathione in a hurry, and gets your immune system fired up and going very quickly. This is really hard on the body and prolonged use is generally not a good idea.
Someone on here mentioned Immunocal, which is probably the best thing out there today for increasing glutathione levels. Simply because it is a food product the contents and function of which is to deliver rich quantities of cysteine directly to the cells, which triggers glutathione manufacture. And there's no one out there offering anything like it.
There are foods that will be richer than others in cysteine, and if one lived in a bubble and was never exposed to this toxic soup we refer to as an environment, one might do just fine.
But the simple fact is that we were never designed to live in the world we've made. Just as an example, you stop at a 7-11 and grab some nachos and simulated cheese sauce. Once your bod gets a peek at that cheese-like chemical goo, it has no clue what the heck to do with a lot of it, so it just packs it away for you. As a result, toxins accumulate, along with the rest of the garbage you're exposed to every day.
I'm 43 years old, I struggle with smoking, I don't eat the best diet being a bachelor, but I get my Immunocal from a friend of mine, and had my very first physical just last month. Doc's words were along the lines of "usually at your age, there is something, but you're in good health for your age"
Of course he told me I have to kick the smokes once and for all, and yes I have my good and bad days with those, but I'm in a lot better health than most 40+ smokers he'd seen.
I didn't tell him about the Immunocal. Docs don't tend to like anything they didn't write a prescription for. Ego thing I think.
To sum up, oral glutathione in itself may yield some benefit for some people, but if you're not allowing your body to make its own by providing it with what it needs to do so, you're missing out on the glutathione ride.
Peace out...
