Hello Forum:
I wanted to give my update on BHT:
I've been using it since April 2007 and it is now January 2008. I can say BHT has definitely cut down the severity of the outbreaks I have gotten.
For me, outbreaks happen for a variety of reasons with my menstrual cycle at the very top of the list of the causes. Since I'm a long term sufferer of herpes (almost 20 years), I have no illusions that I will miraculously heal from it and never ever get outbreaks again (it's not realistic for me). And, I have yet to go through one full month with no outbreaks or twinges but that's not an upsetting thing for me, my issue has always been dealing with the discomfort of herpes.
Internally, a maintenance dose of 350 mg works for me and I won't go any higher than that unless I'm having an outbreak. For outbreaks, I go no higher than 1000 mgs a day. I haven't been comfortable with having to consume it daily though, so for that reason, I've only been taking it 5 days a week--taking the weekends off. This is probably another reason why I still have outbreaks (but who knows with herpes??). (I only take BHT internally with food.)
The other thing I do is the week when I have my period, I'll take BHT along with St. John's Wort. That's only for 5 days though.
The interesting thing I've learned is that BHT works incredibly well topically. When I have an outbreak, I melt about 700 mgs of it in olive oil (wait for it to cool down a bit) and swab the infected area. This is done 2-3 times a day for about two days. I am always shocked on day 3 when there is little or no sign of the sore at all. Topically, I feel BHT rocks!
Starting in December, I began swabbing when I didn't have an outbreak but when I felt the twinges in my leg and it actually stopped the outbreak from happening. I've also swabbed my legs (where I feel the twinges) for good measure.
So, in conclusion, BHT cuts down the severity of outbreaks, my personal feeling is that taken internally everyday should be done with caution but used topically is where it shines.
BHT can be ordered online--just do a search on google and you'll find it on quite a few sites.
I hope this helps someone.
