This fruit is known as "egg fruit" in Hawaii. I have eaten it multiple times without the reaction described above. In fact this fruit is so delicious I used to eat several in one sitting. It's like the texture of a cooked egg yolk hence the slang term. I do remember having a slightly odd reaction in my mouth from this fruit but I thought it was bad or over ripened.
The fruit in the Hawaiian Islands is amazing!!!!! Lately I have been reading this book the 80/10/10 Diet by Douglas Graham. The theory is to eat 80 % fruit 10% fat 10% protein. As I've increased my fruit intake all I can think about is how I want to return to my Island life. It's true that we are meant to live closer to the equator. There is nothing like harvesting fruit right from the tree. I guarantee you have NEVER had a mango or strawberry papaya here on the mainland like you get in Hawaii. For that matter how about a white organic pineapple or aligator avocado the size of a melon.
One of the greatest things about living in the tropics was stumbling on a tree heavy with ripe fruit. I can't tell you how many times I've sat under a mango tree eating dozens of perfectly ripe fruit... juice smeared all over my face clothes sticky with nature's desert...and the best part is it's a gift from nature to you with no money exchanged.
When you really practice this way of eating fruit 80/10/10 Raw Vegan you begin to realize we are meant to be living in warm tropical climates. One day I will get back there for now I am sitting near my heater wrapped in a sweater.
