Silvia Brown disturbs me in many ways. She is too abrupt, and if one disagrees with her, she is downright cruel. The thing that I find most upsetting, though, are her views on religion, the Bible, and the religion she "founded".
I have studied many spiritual paths from Native American Traditions to Christianity to Hinduism. I could list them all, but I don't want to bore you to tears this early in my tirade.
It really bothers me when people come up with new religions that are really just tiny bits and pieces of the spiritual trend of the day. I, personally, believe that if one is going to read anything about any spiritual practice then one is honor bound to truly study the subject.
Silvia Brown falls very short on her research. She misquotes the Bible constantly, inserts things that are not in the Bible at all, and omitts things as it suits her. I choose Christianity as my example here specifically because Ms. Brown constantly brings up the Bible, and it is also the most commonly read spiritual tradition in North America.
Ms. Brown says that the Bible (And, yes, I have read the Talmud, and Torah as well as several Christian interpretations of the Bible) tells us that angels do not have names. I would have to say she missed the part about Lucifer, Michael, and Gabriel as a couple of examples. She says that the Bible states that angels do not have gender, however, I believe that the name choices alone strongly suggest gender identification.
Ms. Brown says that Deuteronomy speaks against the evils of going to see a "seer" easily confusing Bibical terminology. In the time that the Torah was written, the word, "Seer" meant specifically "Prophet", and the subject she is attempting to quote is not mentioned in Deuteronomy.
Ms. Brown speaks of the Torah hesitantly speaking of the "Goddess". Well, there is something in the Torah about God being angry at Israeli's because they insisted on bowing down, sending prayers, sacrifices, and incense to the "Queen of Heaven". God does mention, in the Torah, that before he made Adam and Eve, He made Lallith, "Male and female in the image of us..."(A loose quote) however, it is more of an indication that God is both male and female in one form rather than two separate entities.
I could go on, but I doubt many people are as interested in religious historical documentation as I am. My point is that I find it annoying, and ignorant for anyone to spew forth non existant, or twisted material as fact.
I believe that Ms. Brown is a very good...People watcher. I do not believe her words are inspired by God. I don't believe she is always correct (And, by the way, God states that one knows when a prophet is sent by Him because everything they say comes true). I believe she has honed a razor sharp skill of; cutting people off when she is wrong, attempting to ignore them, cutting them down as human beings, laughing at them, then reverting to cutting them off once again to humiliate them into submission. That in itself shows that Ms. Brown is hardly inspired by anything altruistic, or Godly. I'm not saying that I am more godly than anyone else, but then again, I do not claim to be. I do recognize that on occasion she gives very specific, on target information. I find the source of the information questionable though, and as a woman who did "readings" for about thirty years or so, I find the question of the sources of her information to be particularly frightening.
I believe Ms. Brown is at worst dangerous, and at best capable of misleading people spiritually. I think she found a 'mark' in Montel Williams. I feel sorry for him. I hope he gets a clue that there are many good, and natural things he can do to ease the symptoms of MS.
I'll kick my soapbox back under the desk now.
