What is Stachybotrys chartarum?
Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as Stachybotrys atra) is a type of mold that has been associated with health effects in people. It is a greenish-black mold that can grow on materials with a high cellulose content - such as drywall sheet rock, dropped ceiling tiles, and wood - that become chronically moist or water-damaged, due to excessive humidity, water leaks, condensation, or flooding.
How can you tell if Stachybotrys chartarum is present in your home?
Many molds are black in appearance but are not Stachybotrys. For example, the black mold commonly found between bathroom tiles is not Stachybotrys. Stachybotrys can be positively identified only by specially trained professionals (e.g., mycologists) through a microscopic exam.

Probably I should go to the site and look, but it's late.
Would a two-year cough and some weariness be symptoms?
A pal (senior) suffers in this way. And we saw black mold in the inside of the canopy outside of the front door to her apartment building.
However, we couldn't smell anything inside.
Gad, she's been there so long, and loves it. She didn't respond to my suggestions that mold may be affecting her. [Sigh.]

This is a reply to # 105,507What you describe could be anything.
There are plenty of sources for mold outside - such as lawn furniture, canopies etc. This is because the material doesn't dry out properly after getting wet or moist - instead mold grows.
Just because you see it outside, doesn't necessarily mean that it will be inside. But it doesn't harm to have a throrough check around in all nooks and cranies.
Have a look at the site, and investigate some more. Does this friend of yours have any other health complaints? Are they on any pharma medications?

This is a reply to # 105,506Oh my goodness! For many years I have noticed the growth of mold below my bedroom window, and this is clearly black in colour. What is worse is that my bed runs parallel to the window ledge, up against the wall, so I have slept along side this black filth for more years than I can recall.
I must go visit my sister and her baby, so I have no time to research this at the moment. I will return in a few hours to read of this, however, as this is potentially serious and could very well explain a good deal of symptoms. If you, or anyone else could provide an outline of potential dangers, either from personal experience of otherwise, I would be most grateful as I do not have much time to read of this today. However, if it is as serious as my paranoia is indicating, I shall have to move out of this room tonight!
EDIT: Never mind, I just read the opening pages before leaving, and it is clear that I must move before ridding my house of this contamination. Thanks to CureZone once again, as were it not for stumbling across this forum I would still be sleeping alongside bacteria, etc.

Thank you for replying so quickly.
My friend lives 350 miles away; is an active senior with definite preferences (read stubborn); and probably takes what her doctor tells her when she doesn't know the source of her ailment.
The mold we saw was inside the canopy, which was being dismantled for replacement. We could see inside the wall of the building. It was a mess.
I certainly will go to the site.
And I'll find a way to get through to my pal. Being an apartment building, everyone there needs to know for sure.

You know, I read an article today that said having English Ivy in your home was great to rid your house of mold. Now, the article didn't specify what type of mold, but it impressed me enough to decide I was would buy some English Ivy.

This is a reply to # 105,508Exposure to mold over time can cause a lot of confusing effects. I lived in a nice, new condo for years and got progressively sicker, but never suspected mold.
At first, I developed a touch of asthma, then allergies to dander and pollen, Then I got eczema. I gave away my cat, and ripped out my carpet thinking that was the problem but no improvement. After nine years of generally feeling unwell and getting more and more allergic and asthmatic we were horrified to learn our building was a "leaky condo". Sure enough when they ripped apart the wall it was full of mold. It never smelled and we never had any visible signs. My advice is that if you suspect mold, get an inspector in to check your air quality. It is worth the money!! Its a long road back to health after long term exposure.

This is a reply to # 105,506The Stachybotrys chartarum is its modern official name.
S. alternans and S. atra are the obsolete names for the same fungus.
Interestingly, while the mold is still active (rather than dormant, dried out) the spores are not released into the air.
Mycotoxin poisoning by this fungus is referred to as "Stachybotryotoxicosis".
It grows on many substrates, ie: Make sure your ducts and crawlspaces/attics are free of debris AND well ventilated. Moisture is your number one enemy.
However, bear in mind that the majority of literature is based on experiments with farmworkers, as this fungus affects livestock and farmers, from its infestation of moist hay and straw.
