Good post - I am glad to see that you did not identify the Atkins diet as the preferred ketogenic diet, even though it is by far the most popular version of the diet. Dr. Atkins in fact pioneered studies into the benefits of the ketogenic diet and these later became the basis for the famous Atkins fad diet which came to be marketed as a diet where you could basically eat all the animal fats, other fats and even junk food you wanted so long as you elminated carbohydrates.
Initially a great many people, including mainstream medicine, jumped aboard the bandwagon of such an appealing diet. However, as time went by reality sunk in and an increasing number of studies began to indicate long term damage risks associated with a diet that restricts all carbohdrates.
This appeared to be borne out when Dr. Atkins autopsy revealed that he was obese, had suffered a heart attack, had atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and had high blood pressure, later hushed up and given the spin-doctor treatment by the Atkins family and empire. This attempt at coverup was countered almost immediately by then New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who announced ""I don't believe that %¤#&!§-that [Atkins] dropped dead slipping on the sidewalk." The 61-year-old billionaire added that Atkins was "fat" and served "inedible" food at his Hamptons home when Bloomberg visited. The mayor's inference, of course, was that Atkins was actually felled by his meat-heavy diet, that his arteries were clogged with beef drippings.
The simple fact is, some carbohydrates are essential for good health. So long as that is kept in mind, the ketogenic diet approach could be a good one.

Perhaps it is worth noting that, after negative studies and criticisms mounted, the original Atkins diet was belatedly modified and the revised Atkins diet addressed some of the issues raised in those studies and criticisms.
Also worth noting is that Mercola, whom I refer to often but do not always agree with, also stresses adequate healthy carbs.
As I posted earlier, in the interest of educating, readers are encouraged to do their own research and consider both the pros and cons and then make their own informed opinion. A Google search of "Atkins diet dangers" turns up a great number of links. One of which is from an Atkins site itself:
http://www.dratkinsdietplan.info/learn/atkins-diet-dangers.html
Atkins diet is completely opposed to anything else used for years before by traditional nutritionists and medical care experts. It has been scrutinized lately and some questions and concerns arised. Scientific data to strongly and entirely support medical concerns are still missing. Nevertheless, some incomplete or small studies which have been conducted until now can't be ruled out. Regarding lifestyle, atkins diet dangers are coming from four major directions:
First of all, physicians from the American Heart Association are worried because a high-animal protein and high-fat diet is damaging the heart condition and blood vessels' health (blood flow and blood clots especially). Emphasizing foods like meat, eggs, saturated fats and eliminating fruits and starchy vegetables, Atkins diet restricts, in fact, those foods rich in essential nutrients. The low fiber intake is also blamed by the American Heart Association. In their opinion, an eating regimen so rich in meat and fatty foods is highly favoring coronary heart diseases and even strokes. In 's opinion, many people are already eating too much high-protein and high-fat foods than they really need daily.'s opinion, many people are already eating too much high-protein and high-fat foods than they really need daily.
Regarding kidney stones, specialists quoted by “American Journal of Kidney Diseases” are worried because high-protein diets lead to a very high acidity in the human body (as much as 90%). The calcium level rises abnormally, too. These are responsible for increasingthe level of a compound called oxalate in the urinary excretion. This compound has the ability to combine itself with other present substances and calcium and give birth to kidney stones. This has been revealed by a small six-week study on ten healthy adults.
The same small study has shown that the same high levels of calcium in the volunteers' urine lets out a decreased absorption of calcium (saw as the bone-building material). Eventually, this causes osteoporosis.
Constipation has already been admitted by dr. Atkins himself as an adverse effect of his diet, in the Induction phase (which is rather depriving the dieter of fibers). On a long-term basis, constipation might become chronic. Its appearance is harmful for two reasons:
The nutritional care community is also suspicious regarding: nutritional adecquacy, dietary compliance and quality of life. Until now there are two charges related to “Atkins bad diet”: a 41-year-old male and a 16-year-old girl died while on Atkins diet. It is worth mentioning that the American National Institute of Health is now conducting a large 3 year-study on low-carb dieting, including Atkins diet.
I cannot help but point to what what Atkins autopsy revealed, which among many health problems was the fact that he had previously suffered a heart attack, as well as the statement by the Mayor of New York City that Atkins was "fat".
I think that in general, the healthiest diet is one which incorporates much of the same kinds of foods that our ancestors evolved, or adapted if you will, to eat over tens of thousands of years, and yes that did include meat whenever the hunts were successful, but also included lots of raw vegetables, fruit, nuts, tubors, and some grain. None of those foods were subject to the contaminants present today in our air, soil and water as well as the nutrient depleted soils present today. Nor did they have the nutrition processed out and harmful additives processed in for longer shelf life, taste, color and texture.
And so, in a nutshell, my personal recommendations are a diet close to that of our ancestors, a day each week of healthy fasting, meals made of smaller portions with healthy snakcs between meals, thoroughly chewing each bite, and a glass of pure water before and during each meal and snack.
Such a diet, along with healthy lifestyle, fresh air and sunhine, elimination of stress and adequate supplementation to be sure one gets sufficient amounts of the essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, including plant derived trace minerals, is the way to go for most people in order to achieve and maintain optimum weight and health, in my humble opinion.

I use misinformation well? Pot, kettle - how do you do!
You know, this discussion was going along fairly nicely til you just could not help but make a slur here.
If you or anyone else truly thinks I use misinformation and propaganda, by all means do the Google search and look at the page after page of links and where they come from both within and without mainstream medicine and decide if I am using misinformation.
Again, what I have said is that I feel that your original post had good information as regards a ketotonic diet so long as it was not a strict Atkins diet, and I believe that the preponderance of evidence as well as opinion backs me up.
Here without further ado, is what the Google search I suggested returns, unaltered, for the first two pages.

And it goes on like that for page after page. I get the feeling that you are just one of those who does not like to have the least bit of disagreement with what you post. Maybe I'm wrong.
At any rate, feel free to have the last word as you seem determined to do.
Besides the fact that this is not a debate forum and I have stated my objections and concerns clearly, I have no further desire or intention to debate someone who has to resort to accusing their opponent of misinformation.
Cheers,
DQ (or Tony)
For your information, I do not usually award myself ratings - that comes from the co-mod, and I often have lowered them when I thought they were too high, and never once have raised them. It appears that this discussion has deteriorated into false accusations, innuendo and snide snippets in your last couple of posts.
Even in your so-called "stand down post" in my forum, you just could not help but take a parting shot with this phrase:
"if I had a child suffering from epilepsy I would not allow my personal biases to distract me from fully investigating any and all treatments that show some promise or hope."
which implies that I would let personal bias keep me from giving my forum members the very best possible information, something which I find personally insulting and which is, imho, a breech of etiquette for a personal forum.
As I pointed out in response to your sideways accusation I am not allowing my personal bias but rather my studied opinion based on the information I have researched and the opinions of others I respect who are far more knowledgeable than you or I.
As I also pointed out, it so happens that I have conducted quite a bit of research into just about every major diet out there in preparation for my own upcoming diet book.
In no way have I stated that I am opposed to a ketogenic diet, or even that I doubt that it could be beneficial, however it was you who specifically mentioned the Atkins diet, which I do oppose, and you who proceeded to "debate" the merits of my information and/or perceived bias.
However, I will say that although the ketogenic diet has had unarguable success in treating epilespsy, it appears fraught with dangers and it would seem incumbent to let parents know that so that, should they choose the ketogenic approach, they will know the importance of close monitoring. The following link goes to a study that appears to be anything but personal bias and anyone who has a child with epilepsy and is considering the ketogenic diet should take a look:
Dr. Atkins pioneered studies into the benefits of the ketogenic diet and these later became the basis for the famous Atkins fad diet which came to be marketed as a diet where you could basically eat all the animal fats, other fats and even junk food you wanted so long as you elminated carbohydrates.

The simple fact is, some carbohydrates are essential for good health. So long as that is kept in mind, the ketogenic diet approach could be a good one.
I think that the question that is begging to be answered here is why you are unable to agree to agree on the ketonic diet in general, and agree to disagree on Atkins, instead of feeling compelled to mount a staunch defense of Atkins that flies in the face of the preponderance of evidence, as well as making this a personal issue.
If your reason for such a stout defense is not that someone disagreed with a very controversial version of the ketotonic diet and you could brook no disagreements, then it would be informative to hear just what your reasoning is.
Nevertheless, we agree that your original post here contained good information, whether or not you like to agree or not.
By the way, if I am the one who has such an issue with being contradicted and feel that I must preserve my almighty self-importance (you just have to keep making it personal don't you?), then why do you suppose that I did not merely delete your posts and restrict you from posting further?
I work very long hours every day, mostly trying to help other people, and I make a mere pittance for doing so. And yet I gladly do it for the rewards of easing suffering and preventing death. I know what is in my heart, as do those who know me best. I am trying to figure out what is in yours.
Perhaps, when all is said and done, both of our hearts are in the right place and this just boils down to a clash of strong willed individuals who defend strongly what they believe and became overheated in the process?
And just maybe we can at least agree on that, agree to disagree on the rest. let the feathers settle back down to earth and dispense with the war of words and wills.
Surely, we have both stated our case and the need to re-state it again and again is long past.

First of all, let me say that Tony does not deserve the remarks you made. For starters, I am the one that gives him the kudos. Many times he lessens them, as he feels they are a bit too much.
Secondly, Tony has done hours and hours and years and years of research on various natural health alternatives and he does know what he is talking about. He has a love for people and gets no pay for the hours of research and work that he does. He has a passion for not leading people astray and gives information and advice that will help people. When he sees a discrepancy, yes, he will jump in. Regardless, he always let's the person make up their own minds. Tony would never insist on a certain protocol out of sheer pride. That is not what he is about.
