(my mistake, I've seen whirlpools in rivers, but they were caused by conflicting currents at a junction in the river. When I first posted this, I didn't understand that the glory hole was a deliberate construction).
but I've always wondered if the Coriolis force is also a geomagnetic force that could also have biological effects such as right/left handedness in pre-historic times. Geologists have discovered hand prints in caves that were made by blowing blood through a reed (hollow plant stem) to cover the hand placed on the wall. The earliest showed that cavemen were left-handed, the more recent showed that cavemen were right-handed. Did geomagnetism change, did cavemen cross the equator? Did poles shift or was this planet smaller or the inhabited world was only on one hemisphere?
What else could cause left/right bias/inclination in the body?
