By Jennifer Oikle, Ph.D.

This gem of a volume is chock full of helpful information about how to transform
your health by making positive food choices. Aimed at an audience who is sick,
tired, or overweight, this book provides a truly comprehensive guide to an
“eating-for-health lifestyle.” Hayford does an excellent job of succinctly
presenting an overview of the hazards of the average American diet. She makes
clear the connection between unhealthy eating and a litany of chronic health
complaints. Once armed with a better understanding of how food choices directly
contribute to physical and mental well-being, readers are presented with simple,
clear principles for how to eat to regain optimum health.

There are a plethora of books on the market that address the topic of healthy
eating. What makes Hayford’s book unique is a thorough and detailed discussion
about how to develop an individualized healthy eating strategy for each person.
While most books on diet and nutrition simply lay out an idealized (and
difficult) plan to follow, Hayford provides a reliable method that the reader
can use over and over to adjust their eating habits until they reach their
desired goals. Because Hayford recognizes that changing eating habits is a
process that occurs over time, she encourages readers to make realistic,
incremental changes that are likely to last.

Having healed her own chronic health ailments by discovering the curative power
of positive food choices, Hayford demonstrates real insight into the challenges
of changing the powerful habit of eating. As a result, she displays a knack for
keeping her audience motivated as well as providing useful information so the
reader can successfully plan for and negotiate these hurdles.

The book is well written and well organized, providing a clear program that is
easy to follow. Especially helpful are the “quick reference” summaries following
each chapter. Adding both wit and wisdom to the book, the quotes from other
sources that fill the margins of every page represent additional resources. Also
included are 60+ healthy recipes with interesting tips.

This book is a must read for anyone struggling with chronic health complaints.
By following the comprehensive, step-by-step program, readers will be empowered
to regain control of their health.

Although I knew advertising ploys play a big part in what society
'eats', I loved the no-nonsense approach of stating the facts. I
learned a ton in this book and really loved the quotes and excerpts
along the margins of each page. We really need to educate ourselves
about what we're ingesting. It's one thing we do have control over!
This book was highly informative and refreshing!!

A Must Read, Full Of Healthy Ammunition, September 19, 2005

Kelly Hayford has written an informative, eye-opening, and highly
readable book that gives the reader an armload of reasons to improve
their own diet and ample ammunition for gently encouraging their
loved ones to do the same.

Kelly makes a great case for avoiding what is artificial or
processed and she does it in a thought-you-might-want-to-know way
that presents solid data to give you food for thought. (Sorry, I
couldn't resist the pun.)

This is not a diet book! This is a book to help you achieve and
maintain the dietary side of fitness and health. Kelly is no
stranger to the kind of marginal health that can result from
terrible eating habits. Her own story, presented at the beginning of
the book, sets the stage for what has become a calling for her:
helping ordinary folks create healthier habits around food in a
doable and enjoyable way.

Well done, Kelly!

If you care about your health read this book!, August 25,
2005

Reviewer:

This book is a must read for anyone that cares about what they
put into their mouth. "we are what we eat.." or what we don't.
Unfortunately in the United States fresh fruits and vegetables have
become almost foreign to us. We are not concerned that most of what
we buy in the grocery store is loaded with ingredients that are not
even pronouncable, much less are they actually food! With the rise
of juvenille diabetes, heart disease, and an increase in cancer, not
a decrease with all the treatments, this book brings us right back
to basics. Start with your diet. Start with the food given to us by
nature.Read the boxes. If an ingredient has more than two syllabels
it probably isn't food.

Kelly Hayford has a great writing style, and an excellent sense of
humour so you won't find this book a dry or boring detailed account
of what we should eat. You may actually laugh reading this book.
Another excellent bonus is each page contains an excerpt from
different books, and medical and scientific studies of astounding
facts to the lack of health in this nation.(Make sure to read the
margins). I highly recommend this book and am so surprised it is not
a bestseller.

Kelly Hayford's book and teachings are amazing! I've read her
book and made a few simple dietary changes as she suggests and can't
believe the results. In the first week, I lost 5 pounds while STILL
EATING. In 4 weeks, I've lost 10 pounds and feel great. I've almost
entirely cut-out sugar, caffiene and alcohol and find that my
digestive health, skin quality and energy are dramatically improved.

Kelly gives a simple, no-nonsense view of the Standard American Diet
(SAD) and the ill effects of eating non-foods, including the
marketing strategies to get us to eat these non-food products. She
goes on to lay out a simple owner's manual for the human body and
how to nourish it as nature meant --- with whole, fresh, natural
foods.

I'm buying a copy of this book for the important people in my life
who will benefit greatly from Kelly's ideas. Spread the word!
