Richard Rommer, Gourmet Greens, Chester, VT
Dear Steve, I have just finished going through your new Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine. It is a masterful work. It is definitely the most complete book on the subject. I am sure we will sell a lot of them. Your thorough command of the subject and your easy-to-understand writing style and lots of pictures make it ideal for the person just starting out. And it's great for us experts too. -Best regards,

Kathleen Garrett, Wheatgrass Express, Gainesville, Florida
Dear Steve, What a wonderful job you have done with Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine. I have been selling Dr. Ann's (Wheatgrass) book for years, but yours is far superior.

Diane Wendt, Bloomingdale, IL
Dear Mr. Meyerowitz, I just want to tell you how much your book has helped me. In 1995, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. ....I have been through the mill. The doctor has cut me up many times, I feel like I paid for his medical school. But your story about the woman in Florida with bladder cancer changed everything for me.......Your book is thoroughly dog-eared but not from abuse--from love. I think I've bought at least a dozen copies by now that I gave to friends and even one stranger! God bless you for giving me the key that has literally turned my life around.

From the Author
What's in this Book?

What is Wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is a variety of grass that is used like an herbal medicine for its therapeutic and nutritional properties. It is available as a fresh squeezed juice, a dehydrated powder, or tablets. This book uses the name "wheat" grass because it is the most popular, but the common grains of barley, oat and rye grow grasses that are equally potent. See Spiritual & Religious Roots, History & Culture, Healing with Grass, Nutrition, The Pioneers, Real Stories from Real People.

What does it do?
It has broad effectiveness, but its three most therapeutic roles are: blood purification, liver detoxification, and colon cleansing. As a food it is very nourishing and restorative with such a complete range nutrients that it can, by itself, sustain life. This nutritional miracle is most evident in the animal kingdom where studies prove large and small grazing animals not only sustain themselves on young grasses but also improve their health. See Healing with Grass, Nutrition, Research, Real Stories from Real People, Spiritual & Religious Roots.

How do I take it?
Therapeutically, you would drink the fresh juice or apply it rectally through enemas or implants. For nutrition and prevention, you can make powdered drinks or take tablets. See The Juicers, Healing with Grass, Real Stories from Real People.

Where do I get it?
From your natural food store, juice bar, direct from growers, or mail order. See Resources, The Companies, The Pioneers, Healing Resorts.

Why should I take it?
Wheatgrass earned its reputation from people with terminal illnesses who took it at the eleventh hour of their lives, after conventional medicine left them with no hope. But you can take it as part of a long range prevention and health maintenance program. See Healing with Grass, Research, Nutrition, Real Stories from Real People.

How do I get started?
You can grow the grass yourself, buy it from a grower or health food store, drink the juice at a juice bar or buy bottled grass tablets and powders. But if you are sick, it is highly recommended that you enroll in a retreat center for a 24 week wellness program. As an alternative, you can establish a home-health program using the information in this book and the guidance of a knowledgeable health professional. See Grow Your Own Grass, The Juicers, The Companies, Healing Resorts.

Why should I believe you?
There are many scientific studies demonstrating the efficacy and nutrition of grass foods. Most information about its therapeutic effectiveness is based on clinical evidence and the word-of-mouth testimony of users. See Science & Wheatgrass, Research, Real Stories from Real People, Nutrition, Spiritual & Religious Roots, History & Culture.

Wheat Grass vs. Wheatgrass
A word on spelling. "Wheat grass" is a variety of grass like barley, oats and rye, grown in fields across America. "Wheatgrass" refers to grass grown indoors in trays for approximately 10 days and is the kind that is squeezed into a fresh juice. The tray-grown grass is used primarily for therapeutic purposes. The 60+day old field grown grasses, available in dehydrated powder or tablets, are used primarily as nutritional supplements.

Never Underestimate the Power of Nature

Excerpted from Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine: The
Healing is a Journey

However wonderful wheatgrass is, it is only the fuel energizer for your engine. Many who speak about wheatgrass exclaim its virtues and how it saved them. Wheatgrass gets a lot of credit. But grass is neither a panacea nor a magic potion and some leaders in the wheatgrass movement will tell you it does not cure anything. People heal, wheatgrass helps. You will restore balanced health as a result of the changes you make. Wheatgrass may get you started on this new path, but you will work very hard at applying a multi-faceted total health restoration program. It can take over your entire life. Sick people are often too stricken to function normally in society. They stop working, have long hospitals stays, are bedridden--they have to drop out to die or drop out to fight for life. Even if you take 8 ounces of wheatgrass juice everyday and build a health program around it, it is only the grease for your axles. To allege that wheatgrass cures is to equate it with a drug. That turns wheatgrass into a quick-fix remedy which is the antithesis of what the health concepts behind it are all about.

Causes of Disease

Health is a balancing act. Around 1980, world famous tightrope walker Phillipe Petite walked a rope from one tower of New York's World Trade Center to the other 1,400 feet in the air. He took his life in his hands for real. There was no parachute. Were he to make a false step, he would die. Everyday we take steps in our life that either keep us in perfect balance or throw us on a downward spiral. The fall into disease is not a single bad step, but a series of bad choices. Call them cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, junk food, poor hygiene, stress, work environment, air pollution, water pollution, the result is cell pollution. The signs of disease are low energy, fatigue, poor digestion, gain or loss of weight, unclear thinking, allergies, aches and pains and ultimately the major disorders--cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, emphysema, etc. Cells start to lose their life force. They misfire. Metabolism malfunctions. Organs weaken, digestion and elimination are disrupted. Toxins settle into the dead zones--the weak spots. Now the cells start to darken, choking on bacteria, yeast, fungus and toxic acids. They can't get enough oxygen. Acidification, infestation and destruction--the cycle of imbalance. We have fallen.

Rebuilding Health

The journey to rebuilding your health is akin to rebuilding your house. First of all, it needs a thorough cleaning. Forget about the mop. Pull out the heavy duty vacuum, rent a floor sander, pull down the old wallpaper, rip out the broken cabinets, reset the squeeky door, spackle the hole, fix the windows. Although, you may need assistance from professionals--the painter, carpenter, electrician--you are the contractor. It's your house; you direct the nature of repairs; you choose the pace and you have to live in it during the renovation. Hopefully, you have not let things go so far downhill that you find structural damage. If you've ignored the signs and have termite infestation for example, you may have to surgically replace a beam. If too many beams have been damaged, then the house may be beyond repair. There is a critical mass in any system beyond which it cannot recover. Although such deterioration does not occur overnight, it did happen right under your nose. You contributed to it by ignoring the signs and symptoms or taking wrong advice from the professionals. Or maybe you've just lived like a slob and dirtied your own house and now look at the mess you're in. It's time to change your ways--renovate, rebuild, renew.

Step I --Cleanse

The path to health starts with a major cleaning. If there is infestation, you have to control it. If there is damage, you have to reconstruct. First stop the poisoning of the blood and tissues from acidifying diet, bacteria, yeast, giardia and parasites. Reverse the trend of acidification and alkalinize the blood with wheatgrass juice and an enzyme rich living foods diet. Take nothing from a box or can. Eat from the garden. Eliminate sugar except when it comes inside a fruit. Throw out the espresso machine and the microwave and put a juicer and blender in their place. Clear the blockages, empty the garbage and reinvigorate the elimination system with colon hydrotherapy. Jump start the liver with a massage and a wheatgrass implant. You can change. Your body is a milky-way of trillions of cells which combine to make up tissues and glands. But every minute we breath in new atoms and exhale the old. In six weeks, every atom in your liver is replaced. Renewal is a constant. What foods will you renew with? Stop treating your stomach like a compost and start treating it like a garden. Set in motion an upward cycle of rejuvenation that leads to balanced health. The signposts are: trimmer weight, clearer mind, brighter eyes, better concentration, more energy and vitality.

He who is immune is immortal. --Lao-Tzu, ancient Chinese philosopher, founder of Taoism

Steve Meyerowitz (Biography)

Steve was pronounced "Sproutman" in a 1977 Vegetarian Times Magazine feature article that explored the why's and wherefores of his 100% sprout diet. While over 2 decades time, most diets change, Steve is still a believer in living foods and one of the most prominent spokespersons for sprouting.

Steve got interested in sprouts after a 20 year effort to correct chronic allergies and asthma with conventional medicine. He made dramatic changes in diet and within two months of eating a strict "living foods," vegetarian diet, his lifelong symptoms disappeared. He continued to practice a 100% raw foods diet (nothing cooked, packaged, canned, frozen or processed) for five years. During that time, he also experimented with other extreme diets such as fruitarianism (just fruit) and fasted for as long as 100 days.

Steve's innovative kitchen gardening techniques and the cuisine he developed from them, gave rise to a "School for Sprouts." He began teaching indoor gardening 12 stories above the streets of New York City. He called his no-cooking school, the Sprout House. Steve invented two home sprouters, the Flax Sprout Bag and the Sprout House Kitchen Garden Salad Kit. He supplied these growing kits and a full line of organic sprouting seeds to consumers nationwide via mail order.

Steve has since sold the Sprout House mail order business and he and his family now live and breathe fresher air in the Berkshire mountains in Massachusetts, 2 hours north of Manhattan. Much of those teaching years have been transcribed in his books. He has written such sprout-worthy titles as Sprouts the Miracle Food, Sproutman's Kitchen Garden Cookbook, Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine, and Sproutman's Turn-the-Dial Sprout Chart---a portable, photo-field guide to sprouting.

Steve has been featured on the Home Shopping Network, TV Food Network, in Prevention, Organic Gardening and Flower & Garden Magazines. In 3 minutes on QVC, 953 people ordered his Cookbook and Tabletop Greenhouse.
