Support Seed Library and GMO Education President Obama by YourEnchantedGardener .....

Support Seed Library and GMO Education President Obama Events at the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg, PA and concerns from their State Department of Agriculture about how their Seed Library was running have opened the need for a national conversation about Seed Saving and related issues of GMO education. Issues of liability from Patent Seed Infringement, the inherent Birthright of Gardeners to Save Seeds and return seeds to Seed Libraries, as well as the safety of heirloom seeds from GMO contamination are all up to be addressed. To President Obama, Stand Up for Seed Libraries, Seed Banks, and an open national conversation about GMOs and Saving Seeds.

AN OPEN LETTER I WILL SEND TO PRESIDENT OBAMA.

THIS BEGAN WITH THE IDEA THAT IT WOULD BE A PETITION I WOULD LIKE TO CARRY TO THE NATIONAL HEIRLOOM EXPO, SEPTEMBER 9,10,11, 2014

THIS began with the idea that I would write a petition that I would carry to the National Heirloom Expo, September 9,10,11. The feedback I am getting is that it is very wordy and would not add up to much. I sent it to Jere Gettle, founder of Baker Creek and it said it was great. He always sends nice thoughts. I ran it by the only two Seed Library leaders I know so far. Both thought it needed more work and would be effective for the work it would entail.

I may work this over as an Open Letter to President Obama.

I want to have a statement to read, and an action step that gives me direction at the event. I am looking for a statement that has the support of the leadership of the expo and teachers, as well as leaders within the Seed Library and GMO Education movement.

Many times in my life I have planted seeds that mature into full blown dreams. Dreams come from inside out. I am asking here for the President to lend his support for Seed Libraries and GMO Education.

Comments and feedback welcomed!

Dear President Obama,
RE: Stand Up for Seed Libraries, Seed Banks, and an open national conversation about GMOs and Saving Seeds.

___

Rosa Parks, decades ago, refused to go to the back of the bus because she knew an injustice was being committed. For this, she is called the Mother of the Freedom Movement. When we who love seeds imagined that the Simpson Seed Library was going to be shut down, emotions went ablaze. Stories about the Simpson Seed Library went viral. People who never heard of Seed Libraries became aware of their existence and got in the conversation. Many of us experienced an affront to Food Justice. This historic event, that began with communications between the Penn Department of Ag and the Simpson Seed Library are inspiring the Seed Freedom Movement. A national conversation about Seed Saving, Support for Seed Libraries, and Gmo Education was initiated, and will continue until clarity comes.

Deeper and intelligent research showed that it was not the intent of the Pennsylvania Department of Ag to shut down the Simpson Seed Library.
This story was corrected within days, however, the conversation was out of the box.

Accepted Protocols were cooperatively agreed upon that will allow the Simpson Seed Library to continue serving. I believe the staff member from the Pennsylvania Department of Ag, Johnny Zook, Seed Program Supervisor, was sincere in his letters that he was wholehearted in favor of more people growing their own food.

The idea of having Seed Libraries in Public Libraries is spreading, and the communications between the Simpson Seed Library and a state Department of Agriculture were the first of its kind.

Under Protocols, that were developed in a meeting in the office of House Rep PA State Rep. Sheryl Delozier, staff members of the Department of Ag, and members of the Library staff, Protocols were created and accepted by the Simpson Seed Library . The Seed Library is encouraged to continue to teach gardening and will continue to teach about Seed Saving and host Seed Swaps. The accepted Protocols encourage the Library to act as a meeting place for individuals to swap or trade harvested/saved seeds with other members and to promote that "these seeds be planted the next season and any resulting harvested seeds be used in the next season’s seed swap(s)"

SEED LIBRARIES NEED TO RECEIVE BACK SEEDS

The sticking point will be that the Protocols do not allow for grown out Heirloom Seeds to be returned to the Seed Library. Receiving back seeds is a foundation point among many who are part of the national Seed Library movement. Thought the return of local seeds, the local seed library taps into the inherent intelligence of Heirloom Seeds and their ability to adapt to local climates and soils. Having many Seed Libraries in many places increases regional food security.

Replacing the bank with new commercial seeds each year, even new Heirloom seeds, as the Protocols recommend, does not replace this foundation point inherent in the Seed Library Model. Working together, we must adapt existing Seed Laws to allow the inherent intelligence of Sacred Seeds to prevail. Working together, mature Protocols can be evolved that will meet the need of all.

History reports that citizens of Mechanicsburg were once mustered into a company of unlon Soldiers to keep our nation whole. Gardeners of today and tomorrow are field soldiers welcoming a peaceful world. Their trenches are made of healthy soil intended to grow our dreams with heirloom seeds and ancient grains.

I want to encourage you, President Obama, to take a stand on encouraging the return of Saving Seeds. I am asking that our seeds come out of the hands of a few multi-national companies into the hands of local seed growers everywhere. Today many of us feel we are being enslaved by the few at home and around the world that would control food in the name of profit and in the misguided name of shortsighted science that attempts to control our Sacred Seeds. We do not believe it is ethical to patient seeds, Clearly Uncle Sam now favors Biotech Agriculture yet no honest and open dialogue has taken place about how we got GMOs as a near de facto national policy. We prefer to welcome in a time when Uncle Sam marries Auntie (Anti) GMO.

In 2009, you have been quoted as saying, "Show me the Movement! Make me do It!" Your support is needed now. Encourage a peaceful grassroots movement of gardeners where our common shared dreams as a nation can grow. Seed Libraries and Seed Banks encourage people to grow their own food. Support for this idea is epitomized by your own white house organic garden and the People's Gardens at the USDA Headquarters that began as an organic garden. President Lincoln himself inspired the gardens when he started the USDA.

Growing our own food and saving heirloom seeds and ancient grains is a tenet of true democracy that comes with the continued blessing of the founding gardener presidents of our nation who cultivated personal and profound relationships with their souls and nature with gardening tools in hand. The Founding gardener presidents saved seeds.

We feel the ideals of democracy include each person having a birthright to grow our own healthy food with open pollinated seeds and have the garden experiences we need to enable each of us to plant our dreams. What better place to do this than in Public Libraries that have Seed Libraries and teach food growing skills.

Members of your family have said Let's Move in the direction of exercise, healthier nutrition, and gardening. Stand with us in behalf of the Sacred Seeds and an open national dialogue that leads again to spacious skies, and amber healthy waves of grain. Our time for renewal is now. Help us grow a healthy nation with plentiful Seed Libraries and Seed Banks.

As Martin Luther King once said, "I have a dream!," we say we have a dream and it is based on the power in a simple blade of grass growing our grassroots movement. How Fast Can a Dream Grow? ~ As Fast as a Blade of Grass!

This photo was taken in the tent where First lady Michelle Obama stood twenty minutes before at the New Roots IRC garden in San Diego, about 20 minutes from my house. She called the New Roots garden one of her favorites and said the world was watching it. The growers of plants there are from many parts of the world. It is a perfect place for heirloom seeds representing cultural diversity to grow. I hope to rekindle my relationship with this garden soon--Leslie Goldman, Your Enchanted Gardener, August 19, 2014

This is the photo that appears in The Sentinel News Article by Naomi Cleason of July 31, 2014 submitted of the Joseph T. Simpson Seed Library.

I have been on an extensive two week journey inspired by events at Simpson Seed Library and its communications with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. I was familiar with the existence of Seed Banks through my relationship with Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds the National Heirloom Expo that it produces. This event brought me up to speed with the existence of the Seed Library movement. I see this movement spreading awareness of the need for Open-Pollinated Heirloom Seeds and bringing Seed Saving, support for Seed Libraries, and GMO Education to a new level of public awareness.

I believe that many people who never heard of Seed Libraries are now getting them on their radar. My intent in writing this Plant Your Dream Blog is to contribute toward setting the record straight.

I do not imagine that too many will read this report. It needed to be written.
I believe a national conversation on Seed Saving, Support for Seed Libraries, and GMO Education needs to come the Simpson Seed Library-Department of Ag interactions. My intention is to plant this seed through the Plant Your Dream Blogs in this series.

My personal initiative is that I would like Uncle Sam to marry Auntie GMO, the Anti GMO movement. I see this coming through a shift of consciousness that comes out of the U.S. becoming again a nation of Gardeners. I see this as a value expressed through our Founding Gardener Presidents. I see a need for more of us to get Engaged in growing Heirloom Seeds and Ancient Grains. We need to get engaged before Uncle Sam Gets Married to Auntie (Anti) GMO. This will be my focus at the upcoming National Heirloom Expo September 9,10,11, 2014.

There will also be a National Seed Library Summit at this Heirloom Expo. I am wanting to meet some of the leaders. That National Summit is scheduled for 4-6 Wed, September 11. More details will be forthcoming.

There are many organic steps in the process of a national re-education that begins with the individual gardener.

PRESS RELEASE OF ACCEPTED PROTOCOLS FROM THE PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT OF AG

Simpson Library Works with Department of Agriculture to Comply with 2004 Seed Act
PRESS RELEASE OF ACCEPTED PROTOCOLS BY THE SIMPSON SEED LIBRARY

CARLISLE, PA – The Cumberland County Library System’s Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg announced today that in order to comply with Pennsylvania’s 2004 Seed Act that instead of accepting and storing harvested seeds from library users that it will host Seed Swap events for library users and will only make seeds available from commercial seed companies in the future.
In early June, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture officials notified the Simpson Public Library that while it was not selling seeds, the library must comply with the 2004 Seed Act which regulates the selling and distribution of seeds. In addition to licensing seed distributors, the 2004 Seed Act requires that distributors only offer seeds that are tested using ‘AOSA Rules for Testing Seed’ and are labeled with each seed variety’s germination test dates, sell by dates, lot numbers, seed types, etc.

Sue Erdman, Director of the Simpson Library, said that since the library is not able to provide testing services for seeds harvested by its library users that the library would not be able to accept harvested seeds as it had originally planned.

“While we were disappointed that we could no longer accept harvested seeds, we understood the Department of Agriculture’s concerns about possible infringement of seed patents, the spread of invasiveplantsanddiseaseorcross-pollination,”Erdman said.

“We are pleased that Department of Agriculture officials worked with us to allow us to host seed swap events. This means that we can continue working with the community to promote home gardening and the preservation of heirloom seed varieties.”

As for the 2015 growing season, Rebecca Swanger, Adult Services Librarian and Volunteer Coordinator at the Simpson Library, said that the library plans to obtain donated commercial seed varieties for the Simpson Public Library’s Seed Library, and to continue offering educational books, DVDs and programs about gardening and harvesting seeds.

Simpson Public Library’s Seed Library was launched in April 2014 as a joint program with the Cumberland County Commission for Women. About 60 people have registered to be part of the Seed Library.

This is a circle of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. This seeds are intended for 1000's of gardeners. I am inspired with the thought that each gardener can play a role in preserving the heritage of diverse nations. If you and I do not commit to help preserve the heritage of diverse seeds so incredibly important to the U.S> Founding Gardeners and the children of tomorrow, who will? Kudos to Pure Food Seed Freedom Hero Jere Gettle, founder of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds for preserving more than 1500 non GMO heirloom seeds in their available for us to grow out now.

WRITING TO THE ANNOYED LIBRARIAN

Dear Annoyed Librarian, Thank you for your writing entitled, Sowing the Seeds of Terrorism @ the Library. I know your story of August 7, 2014, is well meaning and yet points out a need for clarification.

Your story inspired by own words here. Thank you.

I have read and reread the article by Naomi Cleason of July 31 in the Carlisle Sentinel and can see clearly how the seeds of so much ire have been planted. http://tinyurl.com/kx847zh

I do not however, find the ire justified by reading the original letters sent by Johnny Zook, of the Pennsylvania Department of Ag, or the suggested Protocols he wrote that were accepted by the Joseph T. Simpson Seed Library . His letters did not intend to do harm, or say that the Seed Library was being asked to be shut down. The original letter was looking for creative and innovative solutions to a problem that he saw between how Seed Libraries are running now and existing Seed Distribution Laws. Later articles on the Simpson site discussed the Protocols that were agreed upon.

THE SEED LAWS

We do have Federal and State Seed Laws that exist now. We need to make sure that these laws do not interfere with a powerful national movement toward Seed Libraries and Seed Banks. The power of growing food needs to come out of the hands of a few multi-national companies and put it back where it belongs--into the hands of a nation of gardeners.

You will find that the original vision of the Founding Gardener Presidents of the US strongly urged Seed Saving to ensure self sufficiency, democracy, and much more.

HELPING UNCLE SAM MARRY AUNTIE (ANTI) GMO

Check out my story called Helping Uncle Sam Marry (Auntie) Anti GMO for what I want to see happen long-range. The point I am making is that we need to get Engaged Growing Heirloom Seeds and Ancient Grains before we can expect the climate in Washington to shift.

THE INTERNET IS NOW ABLAZE WITH EMOTION
A NATIONAL CONVERSATION HAS BEGUN

The internet is now ablaze with emotion because of the progression of events at the Joseph T Simpson Library. These open the door to a much needed national conversation on Seed Saving and GMO Education. The events now open the door to a major opportunity to see where we are as a nation, and return to another paradigm.

THE PROTOCOLS SAY THAT SEED LIBRARY MEMBERS CANNOT RETURN SEEDS TO THE LIBRARY, ALTHOUGH THE LIBRARY IS ENCOURAGED TO HOST SEED SWAPS

This issue of returning seeds to the seed bank is central to the Seed Library movement and this will have to be worked out.

PROTOCOLS ARE HERE
PROTOCOLS ARE HERE

AGRI-TERRORISM?

The word "Agri-Terrorism" came into the conversation from one of the Cumberland County Commissioners, and the reference of associating this with those who are contributing their valuable time to participate in Seed Libraries has sparked volume's of words.

The Department of Ag was equally flabbergasted by this comment, Johnny Zook, told me.

I would go so far as to say, from an Heirloom Seeds point of view, however, that there have been acts of Agri-Terrorism committed that have eliminated thousands upon thousands of diverse gene diversity associated with Cultural bio-diversity. The crimes committed by Transgenic (GMO) seeds are well recorded, and the destruction of vast Seed Libraries in Irag and Afghanistan by our Armed Forces need to be noted. The National Seed Library movement has come to restore order and peace. I welcome this national conversation that in the end will lead to a foundation shift and ultimately the Marriage of Uncle Sam to (Auntie) GMO. If you agree, raise your hand and Plant Your Dream now with the remaining Heirloom Seeds we have.

The shutdown of the Seed Library at the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg, PA by their State Department of Agriculture is an event that will not go away. Rosa Parks, called the Mother of the Freedom Movement, refused to go to the back of the bus because she knew an injustice was being committed. The shutdown of this innocently intended Seed Library of pure and whole heritage seeds is an affront to Cultivating Food Justice and the Seed Freedom Movement

In 2009, you have been quoted as saying, "Show me the Movement! Make me do It!" Your support is needed now. Encourage a peaceful grassroots movement of gardeners that will ensure individuality of spirit as well as fertile soil where our common shared dreams as a nation can grow.

When dept of ag reps overreached to shutdown the Seed Library at the Joseph P. Simpson public librsry in Mechanicsburg, PA, this event opened what deserves to be e a national conversation about seed saving and GMOs.

Clearly Uncle Sam now favors Biotech Agriculture yet no honest and open dialogue has taken place about how we got GMOs as a near national policy. Let us enter honest dialogue that might lead to Uncle Sam marrying Anti (Auntie) GMO, or if Washington Policy proves healthy, continuation of the current support for Biotech in the farm bed.
