Trees "Eat" CO2
Trees for the Future is a nonprofit that has helped rural communities around the world plant trees since 1989, restoring tree cover to the most degraded lands, helping to preserve traditional livelihoods and cultures, and removing over 1.5 MILLION TONS of CO2 annually. And all for a cost of 10 Cents per tree.

The Carbon Issue
As we become more aware and concerned about carbon emissions and their effect on global climate change, and as people become more aware that planting trees offers a practical, cost-effective way to offset this carbon, more and more people are joining our global program. To them we say "Thank you and ask your friends to join too."
At the same time, we are dismayed by the confusion caused by the claims made by opportunists and apologists acting on the part of large carbon emitters. This is especially disconcerting at a time when there is so much concern and misunderstanding. It therefore seems imperative that we now inform you about what tree planting can and can't do.
The amount of carbon a tree can annually remove from the atmosphere varies based upon hundreds of factors such as species and average rainfall. An average tree in our program annually takes some 50 lbs. of carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the atmosphere. Therefore about 40 trees, which we plant at a cost of ten cents ($0.10) each, take about a ton of CO2 from the atmosphere every year.
The only way these trees can be planted at this low cost, and remain alive and productive for a great many years, is if they sustainably produce important benefits for the people who are planting them. The more than 60 million trees that Trees for the Future plants around the world annually produce more than $14 million in cash benefits for these families, plus the non-cash benefits such as erosion control, replenishing water supplies, and cooling the community. That's why the trees were planted. The fact that they also reduce the threat of global warming is an added global benefit to these local endeavors.
Do you need a "carbon calculator"? We don't think so. A couple of figures you might want to keep handy are:
A typical American causes about 19 tons of CO2 emissions annually - a family of four would have an annual carbon footprint of about 77 tons. Planting 3,200 trees in the program would remove this amount of CO2 every year, at a one-time cost of $320.00 (or $80.00 a person.)
An automobile driven 13,000 miles annually emits its own weight (plus the driver, passeners, etc.) in carbon, as CO2, every year. Planting about 280 trees in the program will annually remove an equivalent amount of carbon from the atmosphere, at a cost of $40.00

I know it's early to be thinking about Holiday gift-giving, but trees give so much to us year 'round. Help the world to breathe easier. Please consider a donation to this organization, maybe in honor or memory of a loved one. Thanks for caring! Blessings, Liora
