Hi, all, this was a "missing blog" that I've just retrieved, so some of you have already read it! Blessings, Liora

The Gifts
by Liora Leah
March 17, 2007

The twigs, gnarled remains of trees standing tall, shed, like so much dry skin, on the ground. This one looks like a squirrel, this--a dragon, this a snake, and this a dragonfly. I scoop them up and hide them surreptitiously in my hat, whipping off my shirt and covering them up, creating a precious medicine bundle. I rip out some of my hair and place it among a pile of leaves--a meager offering, to be sure. Next time I'll bring tobacco. "Thank you, Mother, thank you Trees, for your gifts."

"Do not alter them," Mother says. "You may add trinkets to them, but do not alter their shape, cut them, peel them." I wince inwardly, as from one I've already removed a thin twiggy projection. Beads of glass, jute, twine, feathers--I may need to use glue--a nod of aquiesence from Mother. Tree sap would be better. What did people use before Elmer's came along?

Please, Mother, help me to create of your gifts pieces of art. As if your twigs are not beautiful enough, humans shape, alter, add to. I will not alter, but I will add to--beauty upon beauty.

AHO! And it is so!

P.S. After I wrote this, I found this information on the Internet! Gonna buy some natural glue and try it out!!

http://www.realmilkpaint.com/glue.html

"Hide glue has been used for centuries. It is one of the first glues discovered by man. Hide glue is a natural gelatin that is non-toxic and environmentally safe."

or: Native American arts:

http://www.earthpigments.com/art/native-american-arts.cfm

"Hide glue is all-natural, non-toxic and non-flammable glue, well suited for use on bone, wood, rawhide, buckskin, leathers and other natural materials. It can be used for general gluing, and for mixing with natural pigments for painting."
