Spanning Florida's northwestern shore, the Emerald Coast encompasses nearly 10 million acres of pristine beaches, longleaf pine forests, cypress swamps and wetlands. One of the last remaining unspoiled areas in Florida, this region offers natural protection against Gulf Coast hurricanes and provides an idyllic habitat for sea turtles, American alligators, red cockaded woodpeckers, Florida black bears and other imperiled wildlife.
But escalating real estate development now threatens to overwhelm this fragile coastal refuge with pollution, roads and traffic. To help fight this onslaught, NRDC has added the Emerald Coast to our 2006 BioGems list. We will be calling on BioGems Defenders to help stop proposals for a major airport and numerous commercial real estate projects that could transform this region into a maze of housing developments, shopping centers, office parks, golf courses, resorts, roads and parking lots.
» Urge officials to reject the construction of a new airport in the Emerald Coast's sensitive wetlands habitat.
