On November 9th, a courageous band of 22 House Republicans stood up to their party's leadership and said they would oppose the budget reconciliation bill if the provision to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) remained in the legislation.
At a time when it seems like there's nothing but bad news from Washington, I was so happy to hear this news. And given your past efforts to protect the refuge from short-sighted commercial exploitation, I knew you would be too.
The group of 22, led by New Hampshire's Rep. Charlie Bass, highlighted what's at stake:
"If we reverse the protection for ANWR, then the protection of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canyon, and all other public spaces becomes meaningless. Rather than reversing decades of protection for this publicly held land, focusing greater attention on renewable energy sources, alternate fuels, and more efficient systems and appliances would yield more net energy savings than could come from ANWR..."
Take a moment today to thank the GOP members of Congress who bravely bucked the Republican party leadership and took a stand against drilling in the pristine Arctic refuge. Then, forward this email to your friends to spread the word!
This battle isn't over yet, but we just took a big step forward in protecting this magnificent wilderness area!
