"Dirty Air" Refinery Bill Stopped in Committee! A huge victory for clean air and our nation's public health -- thanks to you and all who took action to help kill this bill! Yesterday, we warned you Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) was trying to pass legislation that would have provided a taxpayer giveaway to cash-rich oil companies, while rolling back clean-air protections for millions of Americans. We wanted you to hear the good news: this morning, the "Dirty Air" measure failed to pass the Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee on a vote of 9-9, with Senator Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) joining all eight Democrats on the committee to block the measure. The bill, deceptively labeled the "Gas PRICE Act" (S. 1772), would have granted huge subsidies to an energy industry already rolling in record profits while doing little to ease soaring energy costs. Today's vote sends a clear message that using the Gulf disasters as an excuse to undermine vital environmental safeguards while Americans pay the price is unacceptable. Thanks again for your help in defeating this bill! All Americans can breathe easier knowing the "Dirty Air" bill is heading for the trash, where it belongs. - Earthjustice Because the earth needs a good lawyer 426 17th Street Oakland, CA 94612-2820 |
