"In 1977, Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan woman, set out to convince local women that planting trees and protecting the environment would improve their own economic well-being and health by improving farm land, water quality, and fuel supply.

And in 2004 she convinced the world when she became the first woman, and the first environmentalist, to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Through the work of people like Wangari Maathai we have begun to understand the connection between poverty, health, and the environment. And still 27,000 people die each week from lack of clean water. Urge President Bush to protect our environment by fighting global poverty!

The world's richest nations have an opportunity to bring about real change in Africa - if they choose to. And they can do all of this at the G8 summit going on right now. By agreeing to a combination of debt relief, reformed trade rules and humanitarian aid for Africa, the G8 nations can provide the peoples and environment of Africa with a brighter future. And the world expects them to.

Thousands of people from around the world have descended on Scotland to encourage leaders to make poverty history, but there is no sign of that historic breakthrough so far.
