O.K. fellow Curezoners,
here's the exciting drama!
The goal is to get locally grown
out of the box organic strawberries
in a major health oriented super store.
The site of this breakout of world peace--
as the slogan goes--
Think Globally,
Act Locally-
will be Whole Foods Market Hillcrest.
This is the result of an ongoing relationship
building process.
Michael Becanson, the Pres of these regions
Whole Foods, was my original avo sandwich maker
back in 1970. The long haired hippy type
is one of the most innovative leaders on the
Whole Foods Market national/international team.
He builds stores. He coaches on how to market
items. He was there for me at last year's Feng Shui
Conference when, without the normal red tape procedures,
I called up and Michael approved me some of the
top of the line beautiful flowers from that conference.
That was a contribution from Whole Foods Market.
So Whole Foods has a Green Mission.
That is to an extent Michael's doing.
He was the man, by the way who introduced me
to the Essene Gospel of Peace.
So through Michael I met Dave, the Store Team Leader.
I stopped in there after Earth Day last week
with the Seed Dream to get these strawberries
in here. Dave came down. I offered him a berry.
He turned it over to Bill Becket, the Produce Manager.
So I called in Bill just now.
Guess What?
Joe's initial price was $25.00 for a flat.
Bill pays $15.00 for a flat of 12.
He could not go for $25.00.
They get their's from a warehouse and
good organic.
I wanted to make this happen.
I called back Joe.
Joe explained to me that the larger guys
are growing on cheaper land far away.
The berries are a number of days old.
The question is, will you the customer
pay extra for organic strawberries that are
less than 24 hours old?
Do you want strawberries with all the vitamins
that nature intended?
Do you want strawberries that are so fresh
they do not know they have been picked yet?
Would you pay extra to support local farming
in your community, to support a fourth generation
local farming family that is struggling
against the high costs of remaining in business
in San Diego, as an example, where water
costs are astrononical?
What are the hidden costs to Joe the Farmer?
To get certified these days from CCOF
costs $2000.00 a year and this is rising.
How much does Joe make on a flat of strawberries?
If he sells them at the Farmers' Market,
at $3.00 each he makes $36.00 a flat.
His cost is about $12.00 and he will be selling
them for $15.00 a flat.
Whole Foods sells them for $2.99.
Jump to the last scene here.
After back and forth calls,
Bill will get ten flats at $16.00 each.
I will bring them into the store tomorrow.
I will do some surveys with the customers.
Will they pay more for these?
I will ask and do some surveys.
I have permission to take some photos.
Thoreau said,
"A ripe berry never reaches Boston!"
Tomorrow, a ripe berry will reach San Diego's
Whole Food Market.
Stand by for the next installment?
