History of Kawanzaa:
In 1966, Dr. Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa as a response to the state of Black America. With the riots that had recently taken place in Watts, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, Dr. Karenga and his "U.S." movement felt it necessary to respond to the Black Power movement and struggle. Dr. Karenga was one of the leading theorists on The Black Nationalist/Power Movement during the '60s. He felt that it was necessary for a holiday be created to "return to the source, back to Black."
