Byline in the Union-Tribune
A photo of mine is going in the
San Diego Union this Sunday.
I spoke the word a week ago
that i wanted this photo on the cover
of the local monthly. I may not get
that, but it is going in the San Diego Daily.
Date: 7/25/2005 9:49:11 PM ( 19 y ) ... viewed 1310 times I graduated in Journalism
from Cal State Northridge in 1971.
I had won two national awards in the Heart
feature writing competitions, both
on Native American themes.
i was a good photography too.
My teacher is DeWayne Johnson,
a dear friend and gardener,
who spent many years as faculty Pres
of the University and on the editors
desk of the LA Times.
He said that my mistakes in the camera--
double exposures--were better than most
people's conscious attempts to create Art.
Once, he took me to a Conference of the
Photographers Association, just he and i.
He is a jewel of a man, and in retirement
his paintings are quite well appreciated.
At that event, they had a raffle.
i though i would win a prize.
I did. It turned out to be 50 rolls of film.
I was a professional journalist for two weeks in the
20th century...for the San Fernando Sun Newspaper.
During those two weeks, the San Fernando Earthquake
hit and i wrote up the stories.
There was a man--a beautiful black man--
who I recognized working for Civil Defense--
He was my nurse aid five years before at the Cedars Sinai
Hospital when I was first coming down with a disease
that they could not name.
In those days, they would say i was psychosomatic;
in these days, everybody knows we are psychosomatic...
We think something and the body reacts...big deal.
It's natural. Now we know that.
Body-Mind connection is no longer a disease.
It's a healing model.
I started to cripple up every time I went
through a severe life change.
When I graduated college, I thought I would become
a great journalist-photographer but it never happened.
It felt bad about that, but then, in retrospect, I had other work to
do. That summer i left the city of LA and moved down to
live with Dr. Jensen. That was my first job out of college,
being his ghost writer.
I do not recall ever having a photo of mine given a byline
in a Daily newspaper of more than 500,000 or more.
this Sunday that will happen.
One of the photos I sent it to go with the Feng Shui Story
will be published in the home section.
The writer Kathy Lebinsky tried to get me to say a quote,
but i was out getting acupuncture when she called.
I did take time to send in photos--time consuming.
She liked them very much. Her spirit lit up as she told me
how much she did.
Rick Frishman, the publicist for Mark Victor Hansen's
Chicken Soup Series 100 million sold,
once said I was the greatest photography on the planet.
i did some photos for him at a BEA..Book Expo America.
I do have a gift to draw out the Soul of a person.
I like the idea that my photo and byline will be in the Union
this Sunday.
it's curious how life works.
Sometimes we do not get where we thought we were headed
the way we imagine we will get there.
Sometimes, we have other things to learn.
It is not what the mind thinks necessarily that counts most.
IT feels like i am harvesting seeds now of plants that went into
the ground more than 30 years ago.
it feels like it is happening day by day.
