Last night, I attended a concert in the Cox Arena
of San Diego State University.
This is an amazing indoor facility built
primarily for the SDSU basketball team
in hopes that with such a facility underneath them
the Winner's Circle of National Acclaim
is not far behind.
The Cox Arena goes many levels down.
It is an architectural feat.
If it were filled with water, it would create a lake
more than 100 feet deep.
Last night, the Aztec Arena featured
The Harmony Concert with Masestro Sri Chinmoy
performing on over 30 instruments from around the world.
Sri Chinmoy is definitely a man of the heart.
He is renowned for his versatility and active
belief in self-trancendence.
The flyer said that
"Sri Chinmoy's feats of strength have been
featured on CNN, BBC, and other major networks around
the world.
The Maestro has throngs of devotees.
Many traveled great distance to be here in San Diego.
I met one from New York who invited me
to call anytime and visit his Sri Chinmoy style
restaurant in New York. He appreciated very
much the flowers I brought from my Farmers' Market
friends and the fruits grown by Steve L White
that I offered freely.
Another I spoke to at the end of the concert
worked dilligently with the thousands upon
thousands of songs the Maestro has written
that all sounded the same to me.
I am not a music expert, although
a do have my favorite artists and tunes.
I have never had a music lesson outside
of trombone class in the eight grade.
I failed at that.
I feel asleep during the concert,
but I wanted to stay till the end because
I had taken a photo of the man who
introduced Sri Chinmoy. He had read
one of my Seven Love Cures to his wife of eleven
years. I wanted to give him a signed copy
of "Your Creation," with a Blessing that the love
he showed for and from his wife
might continue to go out to create a more
beautiful world for all of us.
The man, Anandage, was once the ambassador
from Sri Lanke to the United Nations.
He had helped Sri Chinmoy 20 years before
set up a concert in India. They have been friends since.
He is now a professor at Cal State Fullerton
and Dean of Students at Can Western College in that
area.
Sri Chinmoy had a few other guests on the program
briefly including a three time Olympian body builder.
Sri Chinmoy is renowed for being able to life heavy
weights beyond normal strength.
His flyer says, "A mind of complete silence
is my secret and sacred key to success and progress."
90% of the arena was empty.I was sad to see
that even with free tickets this was the case. The devotees
were unquestionably elevated by the presence of their master
teacher. I know they enjoyed his music very much.
Many who attended from the spiritual community at large
left early.
Sri Chinmoy had many instruments set up on a stage.
After playing one, he would toddle off to another part
of the stage where he would play another. Then he would
complete that instruments, and toddle off to another area
of the stage.
At times, he would call upon his staff to deliver him up
another instrument that was off stage.
I am really not sure what to make of the quality of his music,
although I had a very inspired feeling about the man.
His piano playing seemed like a child of three mixing
hitting the keys with fists to improvisationally hitting various
notes with his fingers. I am not sure if Sri Chinmoy
has ever had a music lesson, although
Roberta Flack, Four Time Grammy Winner
is reported on the flyer to have said,
"Sri Chinmoy's music is a magical flow deep down
in your heart of hearts."
I feel compelled to want to suggest that the Maestro
return to this Cox Arena for a return performance.
Rather than having all the people on the main floor,
and Sri Chinmoy on stage, I would put all the fans
up in the seats elevated rather than him elevated on stage,
I would have all the instruments spread out across the entire
floor of the Arena froor from North to South and East to West.
Rather than use the excellent lighting of Sri Chinmoy's art
in one cluster, I would spread it out as well as an obstacle
course.
I could not figure out what the lighted pieces were at first,
until after the show, I saw they were birds, large free form renditions
of the Maestro's art. Some one told me what they were.
In my version of the Feng Shui set up for the evening,
I would place him in the center of the Arena floor
in his Holy Chair, and then give him a Unicyle or bicycle and have him
get on each and ride to various stations where he would
have his instruments positioned.
I would stage the performance during Football season in the Fall.
I would bill it as a Spirit Rally.
I would enlist the aid of the Football team to bring down the weight
machine from the world acclaimed sports football gym.
In between playing various instruments, I would have the Maestro
stop and do various weight lifts, adding to the theatrical and balanced
presentation of his amazing renaissance skills.
This Master Teacher is definitely a man of the heart.
I would add one of my Seven Love Cures to the program.
I would be delighted to read one as Shi Chinmoy did improve.
I am sure this would go over well since improv appears to be
his most common mode of instrumentation.
Sri Chinmoy would stop between songs and
instruments to give a blessing on the Football Team's success.
The school has a traditional poor performance. I am sure
this could only help.
It is amazing to see what this one man has done with
his playful talents. If he can do it and achieve an obvious success
in his life, why not you or I?
I would be facinated to hear what others
had to say about his music.
Was it just that I am not enllghtened enough
to get it? Did I miss something?
My favorite part of the evening was the opening and closing,
when Sri Chinmoy held hands in a solemn pose under his Chin.
He went into a deep silence that lasted more than a minute
each time.
The silence was louder than any of the music
he played. I will not soon forget that sound.
