What is a Bone Marrow?

Bone marrow is a tissue present inside our bones. It’s fatty and spongy and it forms different parts of blood such as;

• Red blood cells, which function as the carrier of oxygen and nutrients within the body.
• White blood cells, which fight infection
• Platelets, which are responsible for the formation of clots

Also, there are blood-forming stem cells present within the bone marrow. They are immature cells, are also known as hematopoietic stem cells, or HSCs. Most of these cells are already differentiated and are able to produce their own copies. However, these stem cells are unspecialized, meaning they have the potential to multiply through cell division and either remain stem cells or differentiate and mature into many different kinds of blood cells. The HSC present in the bone marrow creates new blood cells throughout our whole life. A Bone Marrow Transplant replaces the damaged stem cells with healthy cells, which ultimately helps our body in making enough white blood cells, platelets, or red blood cells to avoid infections, bleeding disorders, or Anaemia. Healthy stem cells can either be generated by a donor, or there are good chances that they can come from the patient’s own body. In such circumstances, stem cells can be nurtured, or grown, before the Chemotherapy or Radiation treatment is started. Those flourished cells are then preserved and utilised during transplantation.
