large_rally_sign_ORTKThe ballot measure to label GMO’s in Oregon went to a vote on Tuesday, November 4th. Shortly thereafter it was called a loss after over $21 million dollars was spent by the opposition. Not so fast! Even today they are still counting ballots and, at latest count, the GMO labeling referendum 92 trails by less than 6,400 votes out of 1.47 million! This is less than half of one percent! The big news is that there are still thousands of outstanding ballots yet to be counted, and supporters of the measure expect that margin to narrow even more.
The difference between victory and defeat for GMO labeling in Oregon is going to come down to 13,000 challenged ballots whose fate has yet to be determined. Ballots can be challenged for a myriad of technical reasons such as if the signature on the envelope doesn’t match the voter’s registration card. For the most part, these ballots are legitimate but don’t count unless they can be remedied by the voter. This remedy needs to happen by 5:00 pm, Tuesday, November 18th. Supporters of the measure believe that most of the 13,000 challenged ballots are YES votes, so counting them may be the key to close the gap and win the race.
Remedying thousands of challenged ballots is a proving to be a huge job! Phone calls are prerequisite to canvas voters. Rental cars are required to transport voters to their local elections offices. It is going to take another funding surge to support the operation to make sure every ballot is counted!
The reality is that counting these last votes is going to cost real money. They need to raise over $200,000 by 5 p.m. on Tuesday the 18th! You can enable the organizers to make sure every vote is counted by DONATING ONLINE HERE! Contribute to Yes on 92 before midnight on Monday and your gift will immediately be put to work helping to reach voters who need to remedy their challenged ballots. Let’s make sure the peoples’ votes are counted and labeling can become a reality in this important state.
