Crackdown of Seed Library Story Turning to Clarity

SO NAMED "CRACKDOWN" IS NOW TURNING TO CLARITY AFTER A WEEKS WORK FOLLOWING THE EVOLVING STORY ABOUT THE INCIDENTS THAT OCCURRED RE: THE JOSEPH T. SIMPSON SEED LIBRARY IN MECHANICSBURG, PA

MY COMENT ON KATE's SITE

Dear Kate, I very much appreciate the tone of most of this article that I find highly intelligent. I have spent the week following this story with many Plant Your Dream Blogs on it. My latest comes after spending time on the phone with Johnny Zook of the Department of Ag of Pennsylvania, who started this important conversation about Seed Saving and the rules of the state of Pennsylvania. I also spoke to the director of the Simpson Seed Library who was satisfied that the new protocols that came out of their meetings allow the Simpson Seed Library to fulfill its main goals as well as give some good direction to the growing Seed Library and Seed Bank movement. http://curezone.org/blogs/fm.asp?i=2194704

My Seed Dream is that a national conversation around Seed Saving, support of Heirloom Seeds, and education about GMOs surfaces as a result of all our efforts. A national movement toward Seed Libraries and Seed Banks is growing. May the time we are all spending on this story lead to clarity, and more and more gardeners growing their own food knowing that this is being done with the wholehearted support of many Departments of Agriculture representatives, and Public Libraries who are offering Free Seed Libraries to help educate.

HERE IS MY TAKE AND DIRECTION
HELPING UNCLE SAM MARRY AUNTIE (ANTI) GMO

We gotta get Engaged growing Heirloom Seeds and Ancient Grains before Uncle Sam will Marry Auntie GMO.

REGARDING THE INCIDENTS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN WHERE THE US DESTROYED THEIR HERITAGE OF HEIRLOOM SEEDS I COVERED THAT IN THIS PIECE I DID EARLIER IN THE WEEK

KATE's STORY ABOUT THE SEED LENDING LIBRARIES

Seed lending libraries are sprouting up across the land. If your public library has one, you can “check out” specific seeds just as you would books, take them home and plant them. Your green thumb working? Great, just collect seeds from your plants at harvest time, and replenish the Seed Library. If your garden didn’t grow as you’d hoped, however, you can either purchase replacement heirloom seeds for the library or perhaps acquire some from a neighbor who had much better luck with the same variety. Some seed libraries even host community “seed swaps” and other activities.

(Community seed libraries are entirely different from the Svalbard Global Seed Vault on Norway’s Spitsbergen Island, built and maintained as the ultimate, permanent collection of over 1.5 million distinct seeds on the planet. It’s primarily accessible by scientists and polar bears.)

Local communities with seed library programs include public libraries in Richmond (CA), Duluth (MN), Westcliffe (CO), New Port Richey (FL)–which has now expanded into a Community Garden project–and many others. Their number is inching up toward 350 nation-wide (DE, ND, SD, TN, UT and WY are not on the list, so if you know of a seed saving and lending program in any of those states, please use the comments to let us know.)
