Reflections on the assault on seed saving
Reflections on the assault on seed saving
I have a vision that one day all banks will be seed banks. This will come after Uncle Sam marries Anti (Auntie) GMO. This marriage will come through your help. Many more gardeners are needed to fulfill the original vision of the founding gardener presidents of the U.S.
The model for this dream of banks as seed banks was inspired by visiting the Petaluma Seed Bank that is located in a historic bank building. The Petaluma Seed Bank is the Ca headquarters for the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company. It is from here that Paul Wallace and staff organize the upcoming National Heirloom Expo, Sept 9-10-11, 2014.
The sobering reality is that Uncle Sam, the personification of the U.S., is currently supporting popularizing GMO Seeds. Biotech is on the wrong side of the farm bed. This is a shortsighted vision, and has little to do with empowering the individual or the health of any nation.
I am doing research today on Seed Libraries inspired by Pennsylvania Dept of Ag shutting down a Seed Library at the Here is one Facebook page I found. Here are where I am creating my notes: ASSAULT ON SEED SAVING http://curezone.org/blogs/fm.asp...

FUROR ON THE INTERNET REGARDING RUMORS THAT THE JOSEPH P. SIMPSON PUBLIC LIBRARIES SEED LIBRARY WAS BEING SHUT DOWN
UPDATE AUG 9, 2014
I have spent the week learning about the existence of the Seed Library Movement. It was because of the concerns expressed by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture about the Joseph P Simpson Library and how it was accepting back seeds from heirloom seeds he had given out, that the subject of Seed Libraries first came to my awareness. I have been familiar with the idea of Seed Banks through my love affair with the Petaluma Seed Bank the western outpost of Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company. We are less than a month away from The National Heirloom Exposition and I understand that there will be national Seed Summit there on Wed from 4-6 pm. https://www.facebook.com/SeedLibraries
My initiative is to inspire a nation of gardeners and a shift of consciousness that leads to each of us helping Uncle Sam Marry Auntie (Anti) GMO. My take is that we each need to get Engaged growing heirloom seeds and ancient grains before we can expect to see the US shifting its relationship to Biotech Ag in the farm field. http://curezone.com/blogs/fm.asp?i=2181365
I HAVE A VISION THAT ONE DAY ALL BANKS WILL BE SEED BANKS. THIS WILL COME AFTER UNCLE SAM MARRIES ANTI (AUNTIE) GMO

I have a vision that one day all banks will be seed banks. They will offer true wealth to their customers in the form of literal heirloom seeds and ancient grains that their customers are encouraged to plant and grow.
I encourage you to attend this event. I am making every effort to fulfill my commitment to teach there.
The sobering reality is that Uncle Sam, the personification of the U.S., is currently supporting popularizing GMO Seeds. Biotech is on the wrong side of the farm bed. This is a shortsighted vision, and has little to do with empowering the individual or the health of any nation.
Biotech Agriculture is not in keeping with the vision of the founding gardener president's of America.

THE SOBERING REALITY TODAY
The sobering reality today is that Seed Saving by masses of individuals is not in the best interests of the Corporate Agbusiness model that prefers fewer seeds that can be standardized and controlled for profit by a few major multi-national corporations.
Please be assured, control of seeds in not in the best interests of the American Ideal, or any best interest of any nation.
I first became aware of this trend on the Federal Level when I attended the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) years ago and saw how totally committed the Uncle Sam and its scientists of this ilk were committed to the Biotech Model of Agriculture.
During my work following the Food Safety Modernization Act in 2009, it became clear that one of the primary intents of Food Safety was to make Food and its production Safe for investors in the Corporate large-scale food model.
Their stance has little to do with this stanza of the song America The Beautiful that says:
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!
HISTORY IN THE MAKING
On July 31, 2014 an article appeared in The Sentinel Newspaper that described a historic event, the shutting down of the pilot seed library at Mechanicsburg’s Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Pennsylvania. Granted this was the state department of Pennsylvania that did the shutting down, and not the Federal government's USDA, but the event is telling.
http://cumberlink.com/news/local/communities/carlisle/department-of-agriculture-cracks-down-on-seed-libraries/article_8b0323f4-18f6-11e4-b4c1-0019bb2963f4.html
It foreshadows a trend, a direction, a national impulse sponsored in the attempt to control seeds that is supported on the Federal level as reflected by recent events since the presidential election of 2008.
BARACK OBAMA: WHERE ARE HIS SYMPATHIES FOR THE SUSTAINABLE FOOD AGRICULTURE?
Michael Pollan in 2009 pointed out that Barack Obama was sympathetic to the Local Food Movement. This was expressed in powerful videos where Mr. Pollan shared about a friend of his having dinner with the President and Michelle Obama. He showed his sympathy but said, "Show me the Movement! Make me do it!" It was saying that he did not think at that time that the grassroots movement was strong enough to overpower the lobbyists who wanted a different kind of game in Washington. THen, he Pollan said, the President turned to his wife and said, "It Your issue, Baby!" Michelle did run with various initiatives that have supported better nutrition, exercise, and gardening.
Since Mr. Pollan spoke so hopefully of a possible future for food and food reform, we have also witnessed major digs at food sovereignty and cultivating food justice. we saw the deregulation of GMO seeds by the USDA. Since 2010, there has also been a major cry for Labeling of GMOs, and a growing awareness of people who do not want them at all. More and more people will come now, because of events in Pennsylvania to see that that Seed Freedom is our cry now.
Clearly, more of us are aware today then back then that the masses of our seeds and our food supply are now in the control of a few multi-national corporations. These moneybags are having a profound influence over Congress and the delivery of food in our schools. Granted some of this is shifting now, and the positive shifts need to continue.
The solution to me is clear and I have written about this in my Campaign to Grow A Healthier Pizza and the 2014 educational initiative: Helping Uncle Sam Marry "Anti" (Auntie) GMO.
Please read my words in this piece and take them to heart.

WILL YOU BREATHE LIFE INTO AUNTIE GMO
Clealy, Uncle Sam, The personification of our Federal Gov, is in the farm bed with Biotech Ag, but for a few noble efforts from the organic sector that still has a say in how some USDA funds are spent.
I am asking you now, will you breathe life into Auntie GMO? We each are called now to get Engaged in shifting our own consciousness through entering what I call Plant Parenthood.
The Dye has not been cast. The shutdown of the Pilot Seed Library in one city of Pennsylvania is as big of event as Rosa Parks refusing to sit in the back of the bus.
WHICH DO YOU CHOOSE?
The choices are clear now.
There was once a teenage youth on a farm near Mansfield, Mo, who started a little Seed Company to save the Ancient Heirloom seeds. His name is Jere Gettle and he brings us the National Heirloom Expo each September in Santa Rosa. Check on this story in the Wall Street Journal, and through the year, the Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds Collection.

The Assault on Iraqi Agriculture --- U.S. Agribusiness Targets the Fertile Crescent
By Daniel Stone
Coastal Post, August 2006
Blessed with abundant fertile land and water, Iraq, the cradle of civilization, the center of the Fertile Crescent of ancient Mesopotamia, the birthplace of agriculture 13 millenia ago, has, in the past, not only been able to feed itself, but to supply other areas of the world with its bountiful harvest of grains, pulses, dates and vegetables. How unfortunate that now these proud people are receiving most of their food as "aid." Over the past 20 years, due to the Iraq-Iran war, the two U.S. Gulf "wars," and the brutal, illegal, U.S.-driven sanctions over 13 years, during both Republican and Democratic administrations, Iraq's agricultural sector has been devastated.
That story ends with this quote:
"Food, next to life itself, has become our greatest common denominator. Its availability, quality, price, its reflection of the culture it feeds and its moral and religious significance make it quite literally history's 'staff of life.' Today, in the never-ending worldwide struggle to determine who will control its production, quality and accessibility, food is no longer viewed first and foremost as a sustainer of life. Rather, to those who seek to command our food supply it has become instead a major source of corporate cash flow, economic leverage, a form of currency, a tool of international politics, an instrument of power --- a weapon!"

HERE IS ANOTHER STORY IN THE NEW YORKER THAT CONCERNS THE SEEDS LOST IN IRAQ AND AFGANISTAN
"During the United States-led invasion of Iraq, in March, 2003, the looting of Iraq’s national archeological museum received considerable attention, but almost no one noted that the country’s national seed bank was destroyed. The bank, in the town of Abu Ghraib, contained seeds of ancient varieties of wheat, lentils, chickpeas, and other crops that once grew in Mesopotamia. Fortunately, several Iraqi scientists had placed samples of the country’s most important crops in a cardboard box and sent them to an international seed bank in Aleppo, Syria. There they sit, on a shelf in a cold room, waiting for a time when Iraq is stable enough to store them again.
Afghanistan’s bank, which contained rare varieties of almonds and walnuts, and also fruits including grapes, melons, cherries, plums, apricots, peaches, and pears—many of which originated in the region—was destroyed in the 2001 overthrow of the Taliban. Scientists in Kabul had taken the extra precaution of hiding the national seeds in the basements of two houses in the towns of Ghazni and Jalalabad.
MORE FROM CLAIRE HOPE CUMMINGS
From an article in Grist Magazine:
Beginning with the tragic story of how the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq led to the destruction of Iraq’s seed bank, and the subsequent dependence of Iraqi farmers on U.S. aid and multinational agribusiness, Cummings explains what’s at stake when farming communities lose the crop diversity that they’ve nurtured and managed for thousands of years.
Self-reliance in agriculture — whether in Nebraska or Nepal — isn’t possible if communities lose control over seeds that are adapted over centuries to their needs, cultural preferences, and environment. Farmers have been saving seeds from their harvest for 10,000 years. Today, an estimated 1.4 billion people, primarily in the developing world, depend on farmer-saved seed as their primary seed source.--Claire Hope Cummings, Grist Magazine

COMPARE THE INTENTION OF SEED SAVERS WITH THE CORPORATE MODEL EXPRESSED BY THE BIOTECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY ORGANIZATION (BIO) AND ONE OF HIS PROPONENTS, HILLIARY RODHAM CLINTON
“I stand in favor of using seeds and products that have a proven track record,” she said, citing drought-resistant seeds she backed as secretary of state. “There’s a big gap between the facts and what the perceptions are.”-- Hillary Rodham Clinton, BIO, June 25, 2014
It was red meat for the biotech base. Hillary Rodham Clinton, in a 65-minute appearance at the BIO International Convention on Wednesday, voiced support for genetically modified organisms and possible federal subsidies to keep U.S. companies from leaving for tax havens abroad.
Clinton told thousands at the San Diego Convention Center she understood what stage partner Jim Greenwood, the BIO CEO, called the “high-risk, high-reward” nature of the industry.
“Maybe there’s a way of getting a representative group of actors at the table” to discuss how the federal government could help biotechs with “insurance against risk,” she said.
Without such subsidies, she said, “this is going to be an increasing challenge. … I think we should have that kind of intensive discussion.”
She said the debate about GMOs might be turned toward the biotech side if the benefits were better explained, noting that the “Frankensteinish” depictions could be fought with more positive spin.

WILL THE REAL AGRI-TERRORISTS PLEASE STAND UP?
In the story in the Sentinel Newspaper and its online edition we read this quote:
“Agri-terrorism is a very, very real scenario,” she said. “Protecting and maintaining the food sources of America is an overwhelming challenge ... so you’ve got agri-tourism on one side and agri-terrorism on the other.”
"...the department indicated to her [to Commissioner Barbara Cross] that it would continue to crack down on seed libraries that have established themselves in the state."
I see events at the Joseph P Simpson Public Library and the shutdown of its Seed Library as an assault on Seed Saving and Seed Savers. It is the GMO Seed Advocates and proponents who are destroying the wealth of nations and their bio-diverse crops.

Rogue Corn On the Loose
Risking Corn, Risking Culture
Dr. Ignacio Chapela is one of two scientists from the University of California, Berkeley who documented the discovery of transgenes in the Mexican native, or criollo, corn grown here. Chapela and his colleague, David Quist, took their samples from Capulalpam, so this remote village is getting more than its fair share of visitors these days…
The Chapela/Quist discovery is the first report of GMO contamination of a major crop at its center of origin. A center of origin contains the early forms of a crop and its wild relatives. It is the gene bank the world depends on to improve and refresh a crop's genetics. Mexico's native corn varieties are a treasure chest of genes useful for breeding plants that can adjust to changing climate, agricultural, and nutritional needs. Scientists worry that if these plants become infected with GMOs, and if the artificial genes persist, they could dangerously contaminate, and possibly wipe out, the natural genetic basis of the world's most important crops. Although they are manufactured, GMOs are living organisms, capable of reproduction. Once released, they are beyond human control. They are a new form of pollution, one that is difficult to detect and completely invisible. Because so little is known, their release is an uncontrolled experiment, which the biochemist Erwin Chargaff, known as the father of molecular biology, has said would constitute "an irreversible attack on the biosphere."

TAKE A LOOK AT THIS PIECE BY CLAIRE CUMMINGS TO UNDERSTAND THE HISTORY OF THE GMO MOVEMENT
Trespass: Genetic Engineering as the Final Conquest
"I have the feeling that science has transgressed a barrier that should have remained inviolate."
-Dr. Erwin Chargaff, biochemist and the father of molecular biology
Hidden inside Hilgard Hall, one of the oldest buildings on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley, is a photograph that no one is supposed to see. It's a picture of a crippled and contorted corncob that was not created by nature, or even by agriculture, but by genetic engineering.q The cob is kept in a plastic bin called "the monster box," a collection of biological curiosities put together by someone who works in a secure biotechnology research facility.
What the photo shows is a cob that apparently started growing normally, then turned into another part of the corn plant, then returned to forming kernels, then went back to another form-twisting back and forth as if it could not make up its mind about what it was. It was produced by the same recombinant DNA technology that is used to create the genetically modified organisms (GMOs) that are in our everyday foods.
___
"According to Lily Kay, an assistant professor of the history of science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, genetic engineering came about as the result of the concerted effort of a few scientists, who, along with their academic and philanthropic sponsors, had a shared vision about how they could use genetics to reshape science and society. In her book The Molecular Vision of Life: Caltech, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Rise of the New Biology, Kay writes that this vision was not so much about underlying biological principles as it was about social values. The new biology that evolved from this thinking was founded on a strong belief in "industrial capitalism" and its perceived mandate for "science-based social intervention." The potential for this idea, and the intentional strategy to use it for social purposes was clearly understood from the outset, says Kay. The developers of "molecular biology" (a term coined by the Rockefeller Foundation) were confident that it would offer them a previously unimagined power and control over both nature and society."

SO WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
Ancient Grain growing symbolizes the grassroots movement I see that needs to grow.
I reflect on the power inherent in an heirloom seed to grow:
Thoreau writes in the forward to his last book Faith in a Seed:
“Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed
there, and I am prepared to expect wonders.”
The seeds he was talking about where Heirloom Seeds and Ancient Grains.

How more beautiful would the world be

on shelves in packages became
the plants they could be?
How much more Soul would there be
in the world if we allowed our
inner Seed Dreams to come out of their

How much passion and life would we feel?
How more peaceful and healthy would the
world be? Mother Earth says, “Plant Your

SHUTDOWN OF SEED LIBRARY
Department of Agriculture cracks down on seed libraries
The commissioners were equally flabbergasted by the change of events, as well as with how the agriculture department handled the investigation — sending a high-ranking official and lawyers to a meeting with the library.
Darr explained that the Seed Act primarily focuses on the selling of seeds — which the library was not doing — but there is also a concern about seeds that may be mislabeled (purposefully or accidentally), the growth of invasive plant species, cross-pollination and poisonous plants.
The department told the library it could not have the seed library unless its staff tested each seed packet for germination and other information. Darr said that was clearly not something staff could handle.
Darr said she believes the library system’s proximity to Harrisburg, as well as media coverage of the seed library, prompted the Department of Agriculture to act in this case.
She said the department indicated to her that it would continue to crack down on seed libraries that have established themselves in the state.
“Agri-terrorism is a very, very real scenario,” she said. “Protecting and maintaining the food sources of America is an overwhelming challenge ... so you’ve got agri-tourism on one side and agri-terrorism on the other.”
Cross said it made sense that the department would want to tackle the issue now while the efforts were small.
Though the seed library is no longer an option, Darr said the department has left it open to the library to host “seed swap” days where private individuals can meet and exchange seeds. As long as the library system itself is not accepting seeds as donations, Darr said such an event would meet the requirements of the act.
