Founding Fathers, Great Gardeners
In her new book, Andrea Wulf argues that the founding fathers' love of gardening shaped their vision of America

The United States was intended to be an agrarian republic. It's foot soldiers were those who grew food. Many more plant parents are needed to fill the vision of America the beautiful.

Helping Uncle Sam Marry "Anti" GMO
This year I am creating the intention that there is a celebratory Wedding up ahead for the United States to regain our original vision. The original vision was of American the Beautiful. Our first Presidents had deep relationships with nature. Andrea Wulf took up the theme in a paper and in her book, “Founding Gardeners.” She states, " It’s impossible to understand the making of America without looking at the founding fathers as farmers and gardeners."
I see the need for thousands more gardeners and small size farmers rather than have our food supply centralized in the hands of a few growers. This is the continuation of our original vision.

'A history book for gardeners; a gardening book for historians' * A follow-up to the award-winning Andrea Wulf's critically acclaimed history of British gardening, this is the story of how George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and James Madison's passion for nature, plants, agriculture and gardens shaped the birth of America. * In the aftermath of the Declaration of Independence and the revolutionary war, these four men turned to America's landscape and plants, and their own stunning grounds, to make the republic truly independent. The self-sufficient farmer became the footsoldier of the young nation and the embodiment of liberty; nature was a unifying force, giving the thirteen states a national identity that still resonates today, the embodiment of a nation that had freed itself from the shackles of tyranny. And their shared love of flowers, plants and botany brought them together when political rivalries threatened to splinter them. * Through a series of vignettes spanning the Declaration of Independence to the death of Adams and Jefferson exactly 50 years to the day afterwards - stories that weave the political, the personal and the botanical and are in turns funny, fascinating and moving - The Founding Gardeners shows is that it is impossible to understand these visionary men and the American nation without considering their love of gardening.

Founding Gardeners by Andrea Wulf Reviews and Info
'Wulf takes a startlingly fresh and revealing perspective on Founding Fathers Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison, chronicling their passion for landscape, trees, farming and gardening, and analyzing most thrillingly how their deep appreciation for “the balance of nature” shaped our nation’s “founding principles.” ' Top 100 Books of 2011, Kansas City Star
“Eloquently written and very beguiling "Founding Gardeners” … Anyone who thinks gardening has zilch to do with politics should read this book … [Wulf] is a writer of considerable grace and breadth of vision, and "Founding Gardeners" is an excellent portrait of the early years of the federal republic. It will delight the general reader, not just the garden buff. But for the garden enthusiast, this is a book of special interest, reminding us that a garden has a purpose, a character, a soul -- that it's an expression of our relationship not just to the soil, but to a vision of the world.”, The Plain Dealer, Ohio
"Andrea Wulf's fine story of how gardening and farming shaped the thinking of Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and James Madison … One of Wulf's most luxurious and sharp-witted chapters concerns the matter that would fertilize a new nation: 'Mundane as it seems,' she writes, 'manure was of the greatest concern to all four of them." How did agriculture influence the nation’s structure?
Jefferson believed independent farmers should be the foot soldiers of the nation. When he purchased the Louisiana Territory, several Federalists opposed this, questioning why they should spend money “for land of which we already have too much.” But Jefferson believed vast lands were necessary for his agrarian republic.

Agrarian values should be right up there at the top of rebuilding America. Oil and Industry appears to be the ongoing priorities in the new American thought processes. When Americans get hungry enough perhaps they will be enlightened. Sweat equity is real where I come from.

It was red meat for the biotech base. Hillary Rodham Clinton, in a 65-minute appearance at the BIO International Convention on Wednesday, voiced support for genetically modified organisms and possible federal subsidies to keep U.S. companies from leaving for tax havens abroad.
“I stand in favor of using seeds and products that have a proven track record,” she said, citing drought-resistant seeds she backed as secretary of state. “There’s a big gap between the facts and what the perceptions are.”
