Event Description
Intensive workshop includes hands-on work, study, and an exploration of the Biodynamic Agricultural Method and the cosmic forces that affect the farm organism.
Workshop given by Harald Hoven, founder and director of Raphael Garden at Rudolf Steiner College in Sacramento California, a Leading Center for Biodynamic education in the United States.
What is Biodynamics?
Biodynamics is the first organized organic approach to farming (post agrochemicals), developed from indications given in 1924 in a series of lectures by Rudolf Steiner.
A Biodynamic farm is a self-sufficient organism, it entails the use of compost and spray preparations in cooperation with natural rhythms. These result in high quality produce, the health of the land and the livestock, and the independence from damaging modern agriculture practices with their use of chemicals in herbicides, fertilizers and pesticides.
This course is for
Homesteaders, backyard gardeners, farmers, ranchers, landscapers, educators, environmentalists, students, and anybody who wishes to learn how to live sustainably and grow their own food.
Covered Subjects
- The workshop will begin with an introduction to biodynamics: its origins, foundations, and defining concepts.
- Principles of Biodynamic Composting - We will learn about the basics of compost-making, build a biodynamic compost pile, and discuss how to understand the biodynamic compost preparations.
- Understanding the Biodynamic Preparations - We will make and apply “horn manure” (BD500), and learn about the balancing effect of the spray preparations (BD500 and BD501).
-In preparation for the Cosmic Rhythms section we will do some Star Gazing if weather permits Saturday Night.
- Cosmic Rhythms and Planting Calendars - Learn about cosmic influences that affect plants and how planting calendars help you see plants in relationship to cosmic events, increasing awareness of the land’s cosmic surroundings.
- Seed Saving for Self-Sufficiency - learn to save your own seed—a crucial part of creating a self-contained farm organism—by encouraging varieties best suited for your environment.
-Time permitting there will be other practical activities like fruit tree pruning, swell digging, etc.
