Recycled Plastic Floor Mat!

UPDATED! I've had my large kitchen floor mat made of recycled plastic for years and it's held up very well. Just be careful where you put your feet!

My recycled plastic kitchen Mad Mat                                                                                           photo by Liora Leah 2013

Yesterday I took a "flying fall". I was headed from the dining room into the family room via the kitchen (there’s an open floor plan in my house) and I managed to get the front edge of one flip flop under the large thick “green” floor mat made out of recycled plastic soda bottles that covers up my worn-out parquet kitchen floor.

I tripped and lost my balance, only I didn't fall right then and there. I had been in such a hurry and I had so much forward momentum that my legs kept on moving and I kept on going towards the family room, all the while desperately trying to catch my balance.  I finally crashed to the floor 15 feet from where I'd tripped, banging both knees, an elbow and a shoulder.  THAT HURT!   I laid there groaning for a few moments and mentally assessing the damage before a family member helped me to sit up and handed me two ice packs. Sitting there feeling stupid, bruised, and sore but otherwise unhurt, I said, "at least I didn't break my glasses!"

This story does not sound like much of an endorsement for a good product, but all clumsiness aside, it is a GREAT MAT! I've had it for about 6 years now and it has held up very well in a high traffic area.

What I really like about the mat is that it is handcrafted of 100% recycled plastic soda bottles by fair trade artisans in Thailand. And, it looks nice!

"Mad Mats" from Mariachi Imports:
http://madmats.com/  "Mariachi is dedicated to producing environmentally and socially responsible products. 'We are passionate about two things: One, the environment, and two, fairness in the work place. It is essential to us to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. It means tighter margins for us, but it’s always worth it. In fact, we have found that incorporating this principle into the structure of all our operations is rewarding in a way that extra dollars could never be.' In the end, it’s actually pretty easy to do the right thing."

"All of our products are made by hand - people producing artful works with incredible care and pride. That also means that no two products will be exactly alike, and that there will be some imperfections. That is the beauty of hand-made products.

We adhere to best fair trade and environmental practices. We treat the people who make our products, regardless of where they are in the world, as we ourselves expect to be treated. Equally important, we strive to minimize our environmental footprint both through the materials we use and our production processes."
