AAAS STATEMENT

NINA FEDEROFF IN NEW YORK TIMES ON GENETIC ENGINEERING OF FOODS

FOOD prices are at record highs and the ranks of the hungry are swelling once again. A warming climate is beginning to nibble at crop yields worldwide. The United Nations predicts that there will be one to three billion more people to feed by midcentury.

Yet even as the Obama administration says it wants to stimulate innovation by eliminating unnecessary regulations, the Environmental Protection Agency wants to require even more data on genetically modified crops, which have been improved using technology with great promise and a track record of safety. The process for approving these crops has become so costly and burdensome that it is choking off innovation.

York Times)BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGYFOOD POLICY
August 19th, 2011 By Anna Lappé

With all due respect, Nina Federoff’s New York Times op-ed reads like it was written two decades ago when the jury was still out about the potential of the biotech industry to reduce hunger, increase nutritional quality in foods, and decrease agriculture’s reliance on toxic chemicals and other expensive inputs that most of the world’s farmers can’t afford.

With more than 15 years of commercialized GMOs behind us, we know not to believe these promises any longer.

Around the world, from the Government Office of Science in the UK to the National Research Council in the United States, to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, there is consensus: in order to address the roots of hunger today and build a food system that will feed the future, we must invest in “sustainable intensification”—not expensive GMO technology that threatens biodiversity and locks us into dependence on fossil fuels, fossil water, and agrochemicals. And that’s never proven its superiority, even in yields.

AAAS ANNUAL MEETING DATA
FEBRUARY BOSTON

I have set an intention to be part of a future topical lecture at the AAAS. I want to watch the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science closely when they meet in Boston.

This is the meeting where I met Dr.Robert Fraley, the father of Round Up Ready Technology.

Other points of view in science need to be heard within the AAAS.
