URBAN AGRICULTURE IS IN; PESTICIDE DRIVEN BIG AG IS BANKRUPTING
THE US FARM ECONOMY
Urban Agriculture is in. It has to be. Our system of Big Ag, where we imagine a world controlled by Pesticides and Herbicides and making war against nature is a dying out principle if human beings are to Survive This Day, and Thrive through 2012.
Hidden Costs of Industrial Agriculture
Much of the agriculture practiced in the United States today is industrial-style agriculture. That is, farms are often very large, highly specialized, and run like factories with large inputs of fossil fuels, pesticides and other chemicals, and synthetic fertilizers derived from oil. This industrial agriculture is sometimes considered a great success. But is it? It has had large, complex effects on our environment, our economy, and our urban and rural social fabric. A new awareness of the costs is beginning to suggest that the benefits are not as great as they formerly appeared.
Agriculture at a Crossroads
It is time to transform agriculture into a sustainable enterprise, one based on systems that can be employed for centuries -- not decades -- without undermining the resources on which agricultural productivity depends.

A SOUND ECONOMY HAD ITS FOUNDATION IN THE COMPOST PILE
A sound economy, from the point of view of healthy vegetables and fruits, has its foundation in the compost pile. by this I mean, a philosophy of life where whatever we take from the earth, we give it back to the earth. This is a foundational principle of Organic Agriculture.
RECYCLING HAS BECOME A BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY
In less that twenty years, recycling has come into the mainstream. We still have a ways to go. A lot of the the habits we have still fall through the cracks, such as our Toxic Butts from filtered cigarettes; and a host of unnamed problems; and yet, on college campuses everywhere, the trend toward composting, and in society in general, the trend toward building soil, will catch on.
THE WRITING ON THE WALL
On January 31, San Diego joined the ranks of the cities giving a big yes to Urban Agriculture. A few days later, I received a well thought out new invention from my friend Tony Tracy. It is called the No Fly Zone TT. The "TT stands from Tony Tracy.
The need to Shift our thinking, and allow farmers and Urban Agriculture is going to create a learning curve.
WHERE COMPOST LIVES, FRUIT FLIES AND OTHER FLYING INSECTS BREED
Where compost lives, fruit flies and other flying insects breed. They go with the territory. In nearby Carmel Valley, this became a big issue, as one of our most upstanding organic farmers, Bill Brammer of Bee Wise Farm came up against upsetting feelings from his neighbors. The posh area was becoming a gnat zone, Not a No Fly Zone for insects.
IT IS POSSIBLE TO FIND A BALANCE
It is possible I am convinced, and it will be necessary to find a balance between the pressing need to grow more food naturally--without damaging pesticides and herbiicides--and the need to developing a healthy relationship to insects.
MANY FEW INVENTIONS WILL BECOME POPULAR
Many new inventions will become popular, including the NoFlyZoneTT.
This, my friend, is the writing on the wall.

FRUIT FLY CONTAMINATION OF FOODS REPORTED
FRUIT FLIES ARE A SOURCE OF CONTAMINATED OF FOODS
Fruit Flies, Drosophila sp.
Photo from: http://entoplp.okstate.edu/ddd/insects/fruitflies.htm
Habitat : Fruit flies are of concern both as nuisance pests and as serious contaminators of food. Large populations of these flies can very quickly buildup in restaurants, hotels, cafeterias, and similar food service establishments. Structures or areas in the vicinity of orchards, vineyards, truck crop acreages, etc., are frequently invaded. The ability of the adults to appear from "nowhere" when fruits are exposed and the fact that they seem to be "everywhere" are sources of amazement for most homeowners and individuals in the food industry. Food processing plants, including wineries, pickle plants, dehydrators, and canneries (especially tomato canneries), consider fruit flies to be a greater menace than any other insect pest. These flies cause a high percentage of the insect contamination of fruit and fruit products. Fruit flies are frequently cited as the contaminating agent in reports of food seizures made by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.

BEST COMPOST UNITS REVIEWED
Compost Bins: ReviewsUpdated June 2010
Composting requires heat and air circulation to break down organic waste into usable garden mulch. The best compost bins make it easy to load scraps and yard waste, and simplify the process of "turning" the compost -- actually mixing the pile so air and heat can penetrate evenly. We checked reviews and commentary in online gardening forums to find the most effective types of compost bins, then compared user reviews to find best-bet bins. We also checked out vermicomposting, which uses a colony of worms to speed the breakdown of kitchen scraps.
