What Kind of Hair Removal is Genuinely Permanent?

What are the different types of permanent hair removal and what are the pros and cons of each of these? What is the difference between permanent hair reduction and permanent hair removal?

While waxing, shaving, epilating and using depilatories (hair removal creams) offer temporary hair removal, there are several methods of hair removal that claim to be a permanent solution to unwanted body hair. However are these so called permanent hair removal methods really permanent? Do they really remove all hair from the skin and is the hair removal genuinely permanent?

Types of Permanent hair removal

Broadly speaking there are two methods of long term hair removal that are often referred to as "permanent hair removal methods". They are laser hair removal and electrolysis.

Electrolysis is the insertion of a very fine, hair-thin needle into the hair follicle to deliver a tiny electric charge. This destroys the hair root and prevents any further hair growth from it. This is a time consuming and tedious process that is literally done hair by hair.

Laser hair removal is the process where lasers or light of specific wavelengths is used to target hair. The lasers cause damage to the darker pigmented materials and work best with light colored skin and dark colored hair. The lasers are usually beamed onto a larger area of skin at one go, but several sessions of the treatment are required because each hair may be in a different stage of growth at any given time and to target each hair, the hair has to be in a state of growth and not rest to be treated.

Difference between permanent hair reduction and permanent hair removal

There is a difference between permanent hair reduction and permanent hair removal – while electrolysis is considered to be the only real form of permanent hair removal, laser hair removal is generally considered to be a form of permanent hair reduction.

With laser hair removal, the hair growth becomes very drastically reduced rather than eliminated altogether. The hair become fewer in number and each hair becomes very fine and barely visible with laser hair removal. So this is long term hair removal rather than permanent hair removal.

Pros and cons of laser hair removal and electrolysis

Consider the pros and cons of laser hair removal and electrolysis and get an assessment of what will work best given your hair and skin type and other specifications.

Electrolysis may be the only real form of permanent hair removal but it does have several drawbacks. Firstly there is the fact that many find it very painful: it involves the insertion of needles into the skin and the administering of mild shock for the removal or each hair. Secondly, it is a very time-consuming and tedious process that needs to be continued over many sessions, particularly if the hair is to be removed from a larger area. Further it can be expensive and can in cases go wrong if the technician isn’t properly trained and experienced enough.

Laser hair removal has its own limitations: it is not suitable or effective for several skin and hair color combinations and may work only for dark haired and light skinned people. This is also time consuming and expensive and an inadequately trained technician could mean rather disastrous results. However, it can be less tedious and painful than electrolysis.
