What had been Tropical Depression 12 grew into Tropical Storm Katia early Tuesday and it's forecast to strengthen into a strong hurricane within the next week.
At 5 a.m., Katia was located about 535 miles west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and had maximum susstained winds of 40 mph. The storm was moving west-northwest at 17 mph.
For now, the system is forecast to aim generally toward the Lesser Antilles. Some models hint that it might turn north out to sea without approaching the U.S. coast. However, it's too early to put faith in that prediction.
Katia beomes the 11th named storm this year and puts the season almost three months ahead of schedule. On average, the 11th named storm doesn't emerge until Nov. 23.
On average, the 11th named storm also is the last storm of the season. However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts up to 19 named storms, including up to 10 hurricanes, this year.
Interestingly, the name Katia (pronounced KAH-tyah) replaces Katrina on the list of storm names - and it was six years ago today that Katrina hit the North Gulf Coast and New Orleans.
Katia is projected to intensify into a Category 1 hurricane within the next three days and a Category 2 system with sustained winds of 105 mph by Friday.
Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center has issued its last advisories on Tropical Storm Jose and what was once Hurricane Irene.
