Come Speak out on Cultivating Food Justice!
What is your message for our First Lady to deliver
to the President?
INTRO TO THE SPEAK OUT
April 15, 2010, a few days before the 2011 Cultivating Food Justice
Event at SDSU, Michelle Obama, our First Lady, came to the New Roots
Community Farm to launch her national campaign called "Let's Move!"
She said that all eyes of the nation were on this plot of land. Numbers
of the farmers who had plots inside the farm were left out of the event.
They had messages to speak. One year later, we return to City Heights
for our 2011 Cultivating Food Justice Event. We begin with a Speak Out
on Cultivating Food Justice. What are the Messages we would tell
from inside the gate now? What Messages does Washington and
City Government here in San Diego need to know about Cultivating
Food Justice? Michelle Obama said "Let's Move!" I say that the movement
can be called an Organic Uprising! We are all be asked to be Standing Up
for Nature's Original Technology. That is my Take. What is Yours?
A number of others will Speak Out at the Plenary. We want you to
Speak Out Too! This event will be recorded and sent to Washington
and be, as seeds, broadcast.

just as Michelle Obama and other local dignitaries spoke in front of them
in 2010. What will you Speak Out on Cultivating Food Justice?

What does Cultivating Food Justice locally mean to you? From Leslie Goldman:
April 15, 2010, a few days before the 2010 Cultivating Food Justice
Event at SDSU, Michelle Obama, our First Lady, came to the New Roots Community Farm to launch her national campaign called “Let’s Move!” She said that all eyes of the nation were on this plot of land.
One year later, we return to City Heights for our 2011 Cultivating Food Justice Event. We begin with a Speak Out on Cultivating Food Justice. What Messages does Washington and City Government here in San Diego need to know about Cultivating Food Justice? What messages do we need to Speak Out among ourselves as we seek to create a local sustainable movement? Michelle Obama said “Let’s Move!” I say that the movement can be called an Organic Uprising! By Organically grown, I mean a lifestyle in sync with the beat of nature. Standing Up for Nature’s Original Technology seems a profound priority now,
That is my Take. What is Yours?
The format for the hour long plenary will be four speakers, each with five minutes. Then, we want to hear from you on what Cultivating Food Justice means to you? What messages do we want to Speak out as eyes turn again to City Heights.
This event will be recorded and available to
all who want to see and hear,
and be, as seeds, broadcast.

HISTORIC CONVERGENCE OF EVENTS
MARCH 11
March 11 was the day that 500
Organic Stakeholders gathered to
galvanize an organic movement from top to bottom
and as we are now projecting,
from bottom, grassroots, to top.
Many divergent
ideas were expressed as the movement
that I call an Organic Uprising became to
grow, as the small organic seedlings of alfalfa,
an endangered crop now deregulated for Genetically Engineered
growth. I brought four little bowls of Organic Seedlings
to that industry expo of 55,000. The organic alfalfa seedlings
had deep meaning for many as Super Ripe Images
reveal in videos and still photos.
The seedlings were on stage at two of the main networking
events.
MY POSITION ON THE GALVANIZING OF
AN ORGANIC UPRISING!
It is time for all of us to come together.
Lettuce Keep The Beet, One Beet, Many Pulses.
We at the grassroots, are called to recognize
that the so called organic stakeholders were,
many of them, the hippies of the 60's.
The Stakeholders and the local gardeners
bonding and feeding each other from their
resources will co-create a movement that
creates the tipping point now to challenge
GMO non-labeling and turn the government
around in 18 months.
As Gary Hirshberg, Ce-Yo of Stonyfield Farms
said, "Our children will never forgive us
if we do not act now!
Those at the "top" are reaching out to
the grassroots organizers, just as Sol Price,
in 1999 saw a vision for an Urban Village
in City Heights. It was Price that gave money
for the Mid City Gym next to the Police station
where I see the Speak Out beginning our two day event.
MARCH 11, 2011
March 11, the day the organic stakeholders
came together to galvanize their part of the industry
was also the day, 5500 miles
away when the earthquake and tsunami hit.
QUOTE FROM JAPAN
FROM THE MAYOR OF A CITY
IN JAPAN FOLLOWING MARCH 11
'If anything good can come of this terrible time for Japan,
it might be that people in big cities question their lifestyle,
which relies so much on the electric power provided by nuclear plants
in little places such as ours,' he said.
'I hope that it prompts the government to rethink its reliance
on nuclear energy, too.'
And when, God willing, Japan emerges
from these dark days, perhaps the government
will learn that it pays to tell the truth.

THE POWER OF CITY HEIGHTS
It was the New Roots Community Farm,
coordinated by Amy Lint, one of the volunteers
for the Cultivating Food Justice event,
where First Lady Michelle Obama
said, "All eyes are on this plot of land."
CIty Heights was the city, one of ten chosen
by the California Endowment in 2011
to receive more than 10 million in funds.
It was chosen because of years of work
by the visionary Sol Price Charities and others
to build up the an Urban Village as early as 1996.
Now a new generation of key community
activists and leaders, such as Amy Lint,
Maliki Obado (her husband) and many,
many others are taking a stand in CIty Heights.

FROM THE HUFFINGTON POST
ON THE 2010 MICHELLE OBAMA VISIT
A WEEK BEFORE THE 2010 CULTIVATING FOOD JUSTICE EVENT
Obama toured the New Roots Community Farm to promote her "Let's Move!" campaign against childhood obesity. The event kicked off a $1 billion project by The California Endowment to fund healthy living initiatives in 14 communities across the state, including the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, where the community farm is located.
Some 80 farmers from a dozen countries work at the 2.3-acre farm, a project of the International Rescue Committee that started in June 2009 on city-owned land. Many grow vegetables, like kale, that they grew in the native countries they left because of civil wars and other violence.
"It's a model for the nation, for the world," Obama said after touring the 89 plots, where she hugged the farmers, including a Somalian woman who had Obama's picture and a map of Africa printed on her traditional bright blue dress.
The garden provides fresh produce to the refugees and their families. Some of the fruits and vegetables also are sold at a farmers market and to local restaurants, giving the refugees some income. About 90 percent of the farmers have been unable to find a job because they do not have the skills or do not speak English.
Millions of children in the United States live in what Obama called "food deserts," places where there is no easy access to grocery stores or farmers markets. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says about one-third of children in America are either overweight or obese.

City Heights, a city with a New Roots Community Garden
that caught the attention of First Lady Michelle Obama,
becomes the site for a two day Cultivating Food
Justice Event, April 9-10, 2011.
The Venues include the City Heights Farmers' Market
where produce from the New Roots Community Garden is now sold,
to nearby community facilities.
Our mission is to gather the diverse San Diego / Tijuana region together to work towards creating an equitable and sustainable food system for all people through education, networking and direct action.
A Speak Out on Cultivating Food Justice
will kick off the two day event.
The back drop will be the back boards donated by
the California Endowment, from the Press Tent
where Michalle Obama spoke April 15, as dignitaries
from the city of San Diego gathered.

partner; and me, Leslie, as we began to generate excitement about
the Speak Out on Cultivating Food Justice that will open the
2011 Cultivating Food Justice Conference.
I made a little raw video that captured the inspiration.
Amy facilitated the meeting that preceded our
inspirational moment. She was the tour guide
for Michelle Obama in her visit to San Diego
April 15. The Let's Move initiative was launched that
day.
