I'm going to give the "Mother Earth Heals" Award to food companies that promote sustainable, eco-friendly agriculture and are farm worker friendly.
My first awards goes to: Newman's Own Organics, The Second Generation, for their 100% premium organic chocolate bars.
From the Newman's Own website: "The USDA Organic Seal assures that at least 95% of the ingredients are organically certified." Read more about USDA Organic labeling requirements: http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/getfile?dDocName=STELDEV3004446&acct=nopg...
Checking the ingredients list, ALL the ingredients in these chocolate bars are organic, including the soy lecithin**
Additionally, the following ingredients in their bars are made with Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa: organic chocolate cocoa butter and organic chocolate liquor.
From the website: "The Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal guarantees that the cocoa in our Signature Series was grown on farms that meet comprehensive standards for sustainable farming, protecting soil, waterways and wildlife habitat as well as the rights and welfare of workers, their families and communities." More about Rainforest Alliance: http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/
Another reason to like this company: "Newman’s Own Organics was established as a division of Newman’s Own in 1993, and became a separate company in late 2001. Paul Newman has given over $200 million to thousands of charities worldwide since 1982."
And one more reason: Hole in the Wall Camps. "Actor and philanthropist Paul Newman’s dream of opening a camp for children with serious medical conditions became a reality in 1988. After years of giving money to different charities, PAUL NEWMAN decided to create one of his own – a whimsical camp for children with serious medical conditions. He envisioned the camps as places where children could escape the fear, pain and loneliness of their conditions, kick back and 'raise a little hell.' This idea has flourished and today we are a global family of camps for children with serious medical conditions. True to his dream, more than 200,000 children and families have received the restorative support of a Hole in the Wall Camp experience, always free of charge. http://www.holeinthewallcamps.org/
Thank you, Newman's Own Organics, for your dedication to organic food, the planet, and kids!

**LIORA'S NOTE: SOY LECITHIN, what is it and what is it doing in your processed food? Soy lecithin is an emulsifier, which means it helps to hold all of the ingredients together. It is inexpensive and therefore widely used in processed foods. The biggest pet peeve I have about soy lecithin is that it is most often derived from non-organic soy. I have looked at many an ingredients list on boxes of processed foods labeled "natural" and even "organic" and found NON-organic "soy lecithin" listed.
IF AN INGREDIENT DOES NOT SPECIFICALLY STATE THAT IT IS ORGANIC, then it is NOT organic, even if it's in a box with the USDA/Organic certification (USDA/ORGANIC means that at least 95% of the ingredients are organic, giving approval for 5% non-organic ingredients).
IF PROCESSED IN THE UNITED STATES/CANADA, THERE IS A 90% CHANCE THAT IF THE SOY LECITHIN IS NON-ORGANIC, THEN IT IS PRODUCED FROM GENETICALLY ENGINEERED SOY. THAT'S RIGHT, EVEN IN BOXES LABELED "NATURAL", YOU ARE GETTING AN INGREDIENT THAT IS NON-ORGANIC and PROBABLY FROM GE SOY.
(processed foods given the USDA/Organic label are not allowed to use GE ingredients)

What's in the food we eat? Unless it's certified as "organic", its almost guaranteed to contain ingredients derived from GE (genetically engineered) crops!
