For Months, I, your beet, have been pulling behind
the scene strings as the Rock Your Soul Opera unfolded
on the floor of both houses of the US Government. What
happens in the US effects the whole world. For better
or worse, the people of the US are among the heaviest
users of natural resources in the world. The US has a song
called America the Beautiful. The lyrics make my beet leaves
wave in the sunny wind. Here are my favorite words
from the song written in 1893 by Katherine Lee Bates:
"America! America! May God thy gold refine.
Till all success be nobleness And every gain divine!"
For more than 18 months, the forces lined up in the US
to modernize Food Safety through passing a law.
I, your beet, was working for both sides.
I want to see the Senators and House members chew on Food
Safety. I want a lot of talking, a National Conversation.
It has been amazing to watch! There were more than two million
people in the US who started to talk about food safety! People who
never talked before are now in new coalitions that cross
every border of thought. Tea party members and herbal tea
drinkers are drinking from the same cup! Some on the Senate and House floor spoke as if the bills were about the elected reps saving little children's from contaminated food. When my friend Senator Dianne Feinstein made an amendment to keep the poisonous BPA out of baby drinking sippy bottles, the chemical industry objected. The new US law for modernizing says nothing about GMO's. There is no mention of unhappy cows who are stuffed in sheds and make force fed grains to make them fat...no mention of all the things that truly would make food really safe. The elected reps did not
realize that the cornerstone of real food safety is you growing your own food in your own backyard, joining in kin with others to do that,
and getting in the farmbed with your local organic farmer to make
sure that every farmer, and millions yet taking up the trowel,
wake up every morning saying Happiness is organic!
The elected US reps want to do the right thing. A big Campaign to Educate Washington on Real Food Safety has now begun, You can go to Facebook and join me in a Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Food where we can all have our say. I told Leslie to write THE CHEW ON FOOD SAFETY PETITION
that says we cannot leave the future of food to just a handful of eaters in Washington when there are billions of us on the planet who all deserve healthy food good food
and real food safety.
From my beet's point of view, this bill made food safe for a few people who make the food rules that feel we should take an aspirin when we get a headache, and prefer big ag and big pharma.
The final passing of the Bill came as the clock was ticking down
on what is called the lameduck session of Congress. In this very exciting
game that reminded me of football, one of the Senators,
threw a pass in the last seconds of the game, while millions of people were defending for the beautiful things that we love here in the Space of Love Magazine. Our side wanted to push The beat of nature.
Our ball said, keep this earth ball rolling sweetly. On their football, that they punched between the lines says "Codex Alimentarius Food Rules." Many of us noticed.
The law brings us more regulations in the name of Food Safety.
It brings us the potential to have FDA agents showing up at our local farmer's markets. I'm upbeat. Food and Drug Agents will taste Real Food and meet some real food safety experts, our local organic farmers. Our elected reps will realize that they are not the only voices entitled to have a say on what we all want to eat.
The pass of the Food Safety bill on the lunar eclipse winter solstice sounded a rally cry around the world. More people than ever are stirred to the depth of this Seed Dream. We are all now on the field. Our cry: "Democracy is not a spectator sport." No one, whether by law or regulation can stop seeds from growing, No one can stop the world from becoming the beautiful place it naturally is.
In this lovely Enchanted Garden era, there is only one
beet. Many pulses, all of us on the same team. Lettuce Keep the beet,

of this bill, that I am calling the Cash for Clunkers Food Safety Modernization Act. Wasn't it funny that they attached this bill to a get rid of your junk car bill to get it through?

THE CAMPAIGN TO EDUCATE WASHINGTON ON REAL FOOD SAFETY
These are our aims:
1-To support mobilization of one Farmers’ Market in our local area, the Hillcrest Farmers’ Market in San Diego. To continue to work with local organic farmers and help them sell more of their produce.
2-To continue to develop a 1/3 acre parcel of land near San Diego State College named the Enchanted Garden Intentional Community Growing Grounds where those who live here and who live around the world may study our process of learning how to keep the beat with nature through learning to live together cooperatively as a household that seeks to live in harmony with the earth. The motto of the house will be Keep The Beet. Through growing a simple beet in a pot, we can regain our beat with nature. Not all in the house garden. Some like to prepare food. Others help with other jobs, or rent. The land, as of January 2010 is being refinanced. A Trust to hold the land is being explored. The Seed Dream would be to leave a museum and park for future generations to learn from this experiment in cooperative living that has been going on since the early 1970′s. The intent is that what we learn here can help others, and Washington, understand and adapt to some of the shifts being asked of all of us now.
3- To develop relationships with those who influence Washington and government. A vast coalition across all political, religious, and philosophical lines has now formed. Mainstream media needs to be reached through bloggers filling the gap where journalism once told all points of view. Elected leaders need to be encouraged to follow the principles expressed in the song “America The Beautiful.”
4- We see the world as we know it now coming to an end. A Shift has already happened. It is for each of us to adapt to the earth and relearn the laws of nature, rather than attempt to further adapt nature to our ways. The source of our economic and health crisis is that we have lost our beat with nature. We can regain the beet through becoming once again a nation of gardeners who live in a world of gardeners. One Pot+One person=You are a Gardener. Start to grow your own food now.
