Spray Fruit Trees will be the Norm--Murray Family Farms
Murray Family Farms.
Steve Murray is an important voice
in the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Food.
What seems apparent from talking to Steve
is that we are committed to spraying our fruit
crops with pesticides.
We do not spend what it would take to protect
our crops without sprays.
Steve Murray wanted to go organic but he could
not. A onslaught of pests and vectors increase
due to the lack of government oversight.
Those who have a say on trade bring in damaged
food knowing they can spray later. Is this a way
to ruin the organic field?

MURRAY FAMILY FARMS
http://www.murrayfamilyfarms.com/
On the phone with Steve Murray of Murray Family Farms.
Steve and family have a very exciting farm
with many programs for the public.
I had a great connection with Steve Murray
of Murray Family Farms when we met
at the California Small Farm Conference
in the late winter in San Diego.
He was not spraying his many varieties of fruit.
He was doing his best to go organic.
He can no longer go organic. He has to spray.
He can no longer
grow his 170 varieties of fruit
without spraying. He did his best
for three years.
Our government is not protecting our
organic industry.
Steve Murray is not the bad guy.
He, and others like him,
need support to get beyond the various kinds
of Infestations of bug life.
I welcome his important voice in the
Dialogue on Science, Ethics and Food.
WHAT IS APPARENT FROM TALKING TO
STEVE MURRAY
The government is not doing what it
cannot to protect the US from infestations.
There is a tremendous infestation
of buglife coming from overseas.
We are doing nothing really about it.
Steve Murray points out that are government
is not protecting our organic industry.
Europe spends 89 billion to
protect their agricultural industry.
They have agricultural supports
and steep tariffs.
France gives 85%
direct government support.
In Europe the farmers stage
civil disobedient rallies in the streets.
In the US 11 % of our disposable income is spent on food.
We are not paying much for our food
in comparison to other countries.
Japan is around 22%.
He says,
It is ironic.
Spain shipped grapes to us.
They arrived with live Mediterranian Fruit flies
to 25 cities. If we did shipped to Spain with fruit fries,
we would be barried for ten years from Spain.
We let them do it.
AVOCADOS
US allows mexican avos here
but we cannot ship there.
Mexican avos have infestations.
Our trade is disarmed. he says.
Steve says agriculture is one of few areas where we still
export more than we import.
GARLIC
95% of our garlic is now from China
grown on human feces.

SPRAYING NEEDED ON GRAPES
Early grapes can get by without sprays.
No so with late season grapes.
He was using a natural vegetable oil organic
prevention, but this does not work on late season grapes.
AMONG THE INFESTATIONS
Pierces disease..
cherries, almonds,
table grapes,
Sharpshooter Vector...wiped out grapes in Temucula
Vine mealy bug...
come out from bark...
oil spray oil...
Luster on grapes harmed
by use of vegetable oils after grape has bloomed.
Citrus Red Scale
Spotted Wing Flies Drasophola
Attacks cherries.
HOW DID THEY GET HERE?
They got here from fruit from out of the country,
from Asia
Glassy Wing Leaf Hopper...
He has 170 varieties...
He started from scratch on government assistance.
He had 280 acres. Now down to 180 acres.
JENNIFER HASHIM
KERN COUNTY FARM ADVISOR
Jennifer Hashim,
kern farm advisor told Steve that there are
no late season organic grapes in Kern County
that can be grown with the organic tools available.
The only solution: We have got to block
the entry of vectors from overseas.
We are facing a title wave of pests.
Steve predicts there will be
no such thing as organic citrus within three years
in California.
The culprit:
Citrus Psylid Vector
Citrus Greening Disease
FLORIDA DEVASTATION
OF CITRUS
Florida had 800,000 citrus trees.
Half of them in florida have been removed.
This vector in already in LA county.
Citrus turns green and sour.
The Trees die.
Florida had it.
It spread.
1/2 acres removed--
remaining half
CUT OUT THE FARM BUREAU
in KERN COUNTY?
The Farm Bureau protects the farmers.
It can give the ability to respond.
California was considering cutting
out the Farm Bureau in his Kern County.
The abililty to respond quickly is through
The state decidedto cut 20% across the board
where ever it could.
The UC cooperative extension
has been on the front line for prevention.
They connect UC research with growers.
Steve has been looking at one option, netting
to keep out the buglife.
He used an organic prevention on his cherries,
Tyganic, a crysanythemum derivative
MANY PEST CHALLENGES
Vector:
European grape moth,
melon fly
Growers required to spray
multiple sprays--
THE TREND IS
Trend more intense spraying,
even if you are not in the spray area.
If the disease moves, you will not
be allowed to sell your crop unless
it has been sprayed so many spray
even if they are not in the quarantine area.
what is the solution?
GOVERNMENT
Government needs to increase assistance.
There is no direct assistance
for fruit crops for family farmers.
