Blog: Plant Your Dream!

How long does it take something to Go Back to the Earth?????

How long does it take for common things we use
to go back to the earth, Kids??????

This is called biodegrade.

It is better to have something compost...
compost means it falls apart nicely and worms can eat it.

That is why Keep The Beet Media Star wants kids
to help us get away from using Styrofoam in our school
cafeterias. Her friends at BioSmart make a nice
replacement tray.

We have other new friends we met who can
ever have messages printed on cups.
We have kids make drawings on BioSmart
containers as part of our Get Bio Smart lessons
that are going into the schools.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THESE
COMMON PRODUCTS TO GO BACK TO THE EARTH?

http://curezone.com/upload/Blogs/Your_Enchanted_Gardener/Kids_with_bioSmart1.jpg

Kids at the Whole Being Weekend
were given BioSmart Pots with Foxfarm soil
and beet Roots from the La Milpa Organic Farm..

There was a message here about growing our dreams
with beet roots. We also learned about styrofoam
vs. compostable products like BioSmart.

THINGS TO DEVELOP
AND TEACH

What does biodegrade mean?
What does compost mean?

What happens to a lot of the things we
make? Where do they end up?
How long does it take them to fall apart
after we are done with them?

Below are some everyday examples of items
and the time it takes for them to
biodegrade in our environment:
Cotton rags
1-5 months
Paper
2-5 months if not recycled
Rope
3-14 months
Orange peels
6 months
Wool socks
1 to 5 years
Cigarette butts
1 to 12 years
Plastic coated paper milk cartons
5 years
Leather shoes
25 to 40 years
Nylon fabric
30 to 40 years
Tin cans
50 to 100 years
Aluminum cans
80 to 100 years if not recycled
Batteries
100 years
Plastic 6-pack holder rings
450 years
Glass bottles
1 million years if not recycled
Plastic bottles
450 years if not recycled

Looking at some of the information
on the BioSmart Site.

I got this list form the BioSmart Site:

FROM THE BIOSMART SITE

"Next time you throw something away,
think about how it will ultimately biodegrade into our
environment.

Each day, we choose to consume
and throw away items that are nature-made, man-made, or some
combination in-between.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in 2005, U.S.
residents, businesses, and institutions produced more
than 245 million tons of MSW (Municipal
Solid Waste), which is approximately
4.5 pounds of waste per person per day.

You personally produce 4.5 pounds of waste per day,
on the average, according to this study.
Furthermore...

The EPA reports that 55%, or 2.4 pounds
of your daily trash or waste will ultimately end up in a
landfill rather than be recycled or burned.
The question we must ask ourselves is:

“What can we do today to be an environmentally r
esponsible consumer? ”
Thinking Green

We believe this term, “Thinking Green”
can encompass hundreds of ways we all can become
environmentally responsible consumers.

Everything we consume will return to the Earth i
n some form. As responsible consumers, we must
act as stewards to our Earth in order to preserve o
ur natural resources for future generations.
Further, we must make the effort to properly e
nd-of-life [dispose of] products so that they can safely
convert to basic natural materials
or be recycled into productive reuse.

Waste Management describes Thinking Green
as embracing the tremendous responsibility we
have, as leaders in our industry, to use our strength,
talents, resources and technologies to better
the communities we serve."

--From BioSmart

We at BioSmart believe Thinking Green
is about participating as an environmentally responsible
consumer.
