Barry Logan, in interviews with the Plant Your Dream Blog,
six days before the fated closing of La Milpa Organica Farm
in Escondido, CA, describes himself as a natural born killer.
He knows how to fly helecopters. One of his visions,
after the plug is potentially pulled Saturday September 18
on the priceless farm, is to go to Afghanistan.
There he would spend his time defusing Mine fields
of bombs, a skill that is within his abilities.
There is another side to Barry Logan,
the side many know, local organic farmer.
He, and the land that he has loved for seven years
in Escondido, CA, a growing capital of organic plus
food for our nation,
is considered a priceless treasure to thousands of
local Real Food Foodies.
Logan has had thoughts numbers of times during the last
month of simply walking away, passport in hand,
for what has become a night and day stress point
for months. He has been slammed by regulators
in San Diego for doing what comes natural.
He has not walked away because the plants themselves,
and the love of his community have touched him
him very deeply. Logan, a local hero to many,
shuns this public image, and defers to call La Milpa
a community, made possible by all who tend
the very small farm.
Logan is caught between two worlds.
He represents the 10,000 year tradition
of agriculture, the peasant farming tradition around the world.
Growing food as an inalienable human right,
the noble people with their hands in the fertile soil
know in their very heart beat that food is sacred substance,
a gift from Mother Earth.
It is Mother herself who made food to aid and assist
one of nature's intended natural resources--
the fully alive human. Each person
is here, in Mother's eyes, to become a star on earth
in her Rock Your Soul Opera called Beet Keepers, Return!

They have cited Barry Logan
for breaking laws now on the books,
laws destined to increase as the FDA is given more and
more local regulatory powers over the lives of people
like Barry Logan. S-510, the Food Safety
Modernization Act, is now before the Senate,
and will soon pass. Most senators, and the public
are under the impression that the route to food Safety
means debugging Industrial farming. Industrial farmers,
the big guys, will not suffer as much as the little guys
who can ill afford the cost and time of more red tape.
Behind the scenes, many small farmers and the big guys
know that the Food Safety Modernization Act
is internationally inspired to further give control
of our food supply to large food rule interests
who prefer GMO Ag and lean toward pharmaceutics,
as the most profit making enterprise.
Small farmers like Logan, and the emerging
Farmers' Market movement, growing in popularity
with each beet Logan produces,
are bugs in their system. There system
entails control of our seeds--
seeds of all species. A healthy bee,
honored in Logan's system of farming,
have little room to thrive in the industrial
Ag Model.
Logan says that his customers
are his regulators. He believes
his kind of food growing, that makes end meet
through the help of patrons, can hardly be defined
as a business.
He does not believe Real Food Farmers
at the scale that he serves, need food safety laws to protect the public.
His kind of farming can hardly exist without good will.
Near 100 student or more over the years
have found safe haven at La Milpa Organica Farm.
Their lives, as well as Logan's will never be the same
for the experience.
He speaks of La Milpa as an Open University.
Rather than be seen as a criminal, I sense he
might be called the first chancellor.
Logan says he would not stay on now
even if someone stepped forward and gave him
a million dollars. The price he has paid
in court costs, fines,
and probation, and what he has endured feel like too much
and an injustice.
He wants out. He will likely leave once
he cleans up the land. Doing that may
cost an additional $40,000. He has invested
over 1 million in seven years to keep the farm alive.
At the recent Cultivating Food Justice Conference
at SDSU April 24-25, Logan was one of the two
keynote speakers.
He admitted he had been thinking of suicide lately.
This fits in with the route taken by thousands of
other farmers around the world who have
killed themselves, some going the route of drinking
the readily available insecticides that have destroyed
their livelihoods.

Logan has sold his labor and lovingly
intensive food at four local San Diego Farmers' Markets.
His customers, so to speak, are family.
To them, and local San Diego City Officials who know not
of Nature's Original Technology, Barry Logan is a criminal,
and the La Milpa Organica Farm, the loved
gathering place this Saturday for the last (presumably)
of third Saturday of the month pizza potlucks and music,
is a crime scene.
SO WHAT IS TO BECOME

I see the community coming together
to sit in council to determine how to save this priceless
resource.

THESE ARE OUR AIMS
1-To support mobilization of one Farmers’ Market in our local area, the Hillcrest Farmers’ Market in San Diego. To continue to work with local organic farmers and help them sell more of their produce.
2-To continue to develop a 1/3 acre parcel of land near San Diego State College named the Enchanted Garden Intentional Community Growing Grounds where those who live here and who live around the world may study our process of learning how to keep the beat with nature through learning to live together cooperatively as a household that seeks to live in harmony with the earth. The motto of the house will be Keep The Beet. Through growing a simple beet in a pot, we can regain our beat with nature. Not all in the house garden. Some like to prepare food. Others help with other jobs, or rent. The land, as of January 2010 is being refinanced. A Trust to hold the land is being explored. The Seed Dream would be to leave a museum and park for future generations to learn from this experiment in cooperative living that has been going on since the early 1970′s. The intent is that what we learn here can help others, and Washington, understand and adapt to some of the shifts being asked of all of us now.
3- To develop relationships with those who influence Washington and government. A vast coalition across all political, religious, and philosophical lines has now formed. Mainstream media needs to be reached through bloggers filling the gap where journalism once told all points of view. Elected leaders need to be encouraged to follow the principles expressed in the song “America The Beautiful.”
4- We see the world as we know it now coming to an end. A Shift has already happened. It is for each of us to adapt to the earth and relearn the laws of nature, rather than attempt to further adapt nature to our ways. The source of our economic and health crisis is that we have lost our beat with nature. We can regain the beet through becoming once again a nation of gardeners who live in a world of gardeners. One Pot+One person=You are a Gardener. Start to grow your own food now.
