To U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein responding to your message
Please make sure that local growers,
especially those upholding standards of health
because they are in direct contact with their consumers
such as the growing farmers markets
and return to growing your own food movement
are not impacted by the effort to regulate industrial farming
which my its very nature has bugs in its system.
Please remember that the cornerstone of food safety
is local growing of food and this has been, and will likely return
to being a vital fabric of the American health care,
authentic homeland security,
as well as food safety system.
Make sure that the effort to regulate those who need regulation
does not harm those who can ill afford the cost of more regulation expenses.

Dear Mr. Goldman:
Thank you for writing to share your thoughts regarding legislation intended to improve food safety. Your correspondence is important to me, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.
As you know, recent outbreaks of food borne illnesses and concerns about the safety of imported food have prompted numerous legislative proposals to increase the safety of the U.S. food supply.
There are currently two primary food safety bills under consideration by the U.S. Senate. Representative John D. Dingell (D-MI) introduced the "Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009" (H.R. 2749), which passed the House of Representatives on July 7, 2009. Additionally, on March 3, 2009, Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) introduced the "FDA Food Safety Modernization Act" (S. 510). This legislation was unanimously approved by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions on November 18, 2009, and is expected to be taken up by the full Senate in the coming months.
I believe that any food safety bill should include a mandate for increased testing and traceability of food products, and improve oversight of safety plans at food producing facilities. Specifically, the bill should require companies to take steps to test their products for traces of dangerous pathogens and include a comprehensive farm-to-fork traceability program which will allow the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and local health departments to perform timely investigations of food-borne illness outbreaks. Additionally, I believe that food producers should be required to report discoveries of significant pathogens to the FDA; this measure will increase transparency in our food supply system and will help make our food safer.
Please also know that I am closely monitoring developments regarding genetically-modified foods. Advances in biotechnology and genetic engineering have given growers the ability to alter the genetic makeup of plants in ways not previously possible, and I recognize that this has resulted in growing concern about the health effects and environmental implications of genetically-modified foods. I appreciate your thoughts on this matter and I will be sure to keep them in mind should the Senate consider legislation on this issue.
Again, thank you for writing. I hope that you will continue to share your thoughts and ideas with me. If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to call my Washington, D.C. staff at (202) 224-3841.
Sincerely yours,
Dianne Feinstein
