I am starting a 21 day water fast today (July 06, 2010). Technically I started it at 9:00 pm on July 05, I guess. The plan is as follows: From July 06, 2010 to July 27, 2010, I will consume nothing but water (this includes seltzer water and decafeinated herbal teas for now, but I may eliminate them as well). On July 27, I will start a 5 day juice fast to bring myself off of the water-fast. On August 2nd I will start to incorporate fruits, and then on August 5th I plan on starting a raw food diet.
I have several reasons for choosing a water fast over a juice fast. I have tried juice fasting in the past, but I find that taking in that much sweetness without a salty balance made my cravings for food more intense than ever. I also chose a water fast because this is as much about trying to break the terrible food habits and binging practices that I have participated in in the last year. I form habits really easily, and it is really difficult for me to break them. The best way for me to break habits is to give them up cold turkey, and this is my way of ‘giving up’ unhealthy food and bingeing habbits. Also, I feel very toxic and I know that water fasting is the most efficient way of getting those toxins out fast.
I also have several reasons for wanting to complete a fast. I don’t feel healthy. I have been in and out of the doctor’s office this year with everything from migraines and kidney infections to the flu and chronic fatigue. I am lethargic all the time, I have a headache every day, and I am bloated from salt intake. My mind has been fuzzy at best lately, and I keep forgetting things. My skin has been a nightmare and I get breakouts on a daily basis. I am also pretty overweight. Though weight loss is not the primary motivator, it is definitely a factor.
I am going to try to blog every day about the fast. If I know I have a blog post to make tomorrow, it may keep me on track today. I plan on tracking the weight lost, the way I feel throughout the day, any major breakthroughs or difficulties, and my general thoughts on the fast as it progresses. I am really excited to get this thing started, so wish me luck!
