Seattle bans all non-compostable and non-recyclable food packaging and service ware starting July 1, 2010
The City of Seattle, in a two-phase endeavor, is mandating all food service businesses to replace single-use products with compostable or recyclable alternatives. In phase one, which took effect January 1, 2009, an expanded polystyrene (EPS) or “Styrofoam” ban was put into place to filter out the unwanted disposable products. Phase two, which begins July 1, 2010 is a complete ban on all disposables. Disposables are food service ware and packaging items that are thrown into a garbage can for a landfill or incinerator since they lack any cyclical recovery option. Food service businesses are being educated to use only those compostable products that have been approved by their local composting facility, Cedar Grove Composting, to ensure proper breakdown of the products and accurate claims of biodegradability.

Environmentally Preferable Food Service Ware
Article on Wikipedia
Due to the tremendous amount of waste being generated
from disposable food ware, cafeterias and food service
operations are beginning to convert to more environmentally
friendly food ware. This transition has become more complicated
and complex than expected due to various forms of food ware options
that are available. Newer food service ware packaging is focused
on recycling and source reduction but most of them still
end up in landfills. In order to significantly reduce the amount
of waste being generated from these materials, food service
operations need to determine what food service packaging
best suits the needs of their customers
while creating the least environmental impact.

Restaurants, caterers, and corporate cafeterias purchase tons of disposable packaging to serve their customers. Their clients are increasingly eating on the run, causing the market for single-use containers, wrappers, cups, and utensils to reach $17 billion by the end of the decade.
That’s an awfully high price to pay for goods destined for the landfill in a matter of minutes. In 1991, Environmental Defense Fund and McDonald’s announced a landmark partnership to adopt a new waste management policy at the fast-food giant. The changes included phasing out the use of polystyrene “Styrofoam" clamshell sandwich containers, reducing the size of packaging, converting to unbleached paper products, and increasing recycled content.
