Coastal Sage Gardening / Botany for Kids
John Noble (originally from Brooklyn, N.Y.) has been an organic gardener, promoting and installing native and drought-tolerant gardens here in San Diego for over 30 years, contributed to the development of the Point Loma Native Plant Garden (Planting many of the trees that now stand there) and many other local projects, and also started Botany for Kids, a program that helps kids learn about gardening, native plants, and how to take good care of the Earth.

Genentech Oceanside Sustainability Program
The Genentech Oceanside Sustainability Program is a comprehensive approach to minimizing the impact of its operations and providing resources to employees help this effort at work and at home. Green Genes, Genentechís employee volunteer organization, plays an important role in sustainability decision-making and in the grass roots implementation of sustainability improvement projects. Genentechís employee commute program, gRide, continues to expand. While reducing CO2 emissions and vehicle miles traveled is an important goal and benefit of the gRide program, equally important is gRideís enhancement of employee quality of life, recruitment, retention and productivity.

Highlights of the program include: In 2009, at the Genentech Oceanside office alone, employees:
ï Eliminated 6,162 cars from the road
ï Reduced vehicle miles traveled by 336,698
ï Saved 12,987 gallons of gas and $100,229 on car maintenance
ï Reduced 251,955 lbs. of CO2 Their goal is to reduce their carbon footprint by 13% by 2013.

They increased the amount of recycling in the following categories across Genentech: ï Plastic used in manufacturing and laboratories (+20%) ï Electronic waste (+30%) ï Food-related waste composted (+30%) ï Wood (+109%) ï Laboratory glass (+135%) ï Scrap metal (+496%). The Genentech cafÈ went green with potato based utensils and other green products. Genentech will divert almost 3 million styrofoam cups, equivalent to 54 tons, from landfill every year.

Urban Corps of San Diego
In January 2010, the Urban Corps opened the Recycling ECO (Education and Community Outreach) Center and Rooftop Garden. The ECO Center, a first in California, is housed in a Leadership In Energy And Environmental Design (LEED) certified building and is a green- modeled, state-of-the-art learning laboratory.

The ECO Center and Rooftop Garden provide a training and education resource in recycling, water conservation, and urban gardening for Corpsmembers, staff, schools, local residents, and businesses.

University of San Diego Sustainability Task Force
The University of San Diego (USD) sustainability task force is currently wrapping up its most successful year to date. The task force was established in 2007 and since then it has been working on several initiatives including:
ï Water and energy conservation
ï Carbon footprint reduction
ï Increased reliance on renewable energy

The 09-10 school year started with the opening of the Student Life Pavilion on campus. This new student facility is seeking LEED Gold certification and with the announcement of the 1.23 megawatt solar installation. Last year, through innovative landscaping practices the university saved 2 million gallons of water and an additional 6 million in irrigation head replacement for a total savings of almost 25% of its landscaping water usage. The university is particularly proud of the $8.2 million facilities retrofit and has begun installing low flow fixtures and energy saving lighting and systems around campus. These upgrades are projected to reduce the universityís energy consumption by approximately 15% and almost 25% of its total water usage.

Solar Turbines Kearny Mesa Facility
Water is critical to Solar's manufacturing processes and continued business growth, while at the same time Solar's corporate commitment to sustainability and the City of San Diegoís voluntary reduction goal called for them to significantly reduce our water use. In 2009, Solar Turbines made the decision to reduce water consumption by converting over 90,000 square feet of thirsty lawn as part of their corporate commitment to sustainability. This Xeriscape project was completed in late 2009 and they anticipate a 75% reduction in water used for irrigating this area of our property ... a savings of 3 million gallons per year. And, the beauty of our new landscaping has far exceeded their expectations. More than 80% of the areas that were previously landscaped with turf grass have been converted to xeriscape or other productive use.
