Blog: Plant Your Dream!
by YourEnchantedGardener

Volunteer! Volunteer! Volunteer!

Almost Met Michelle Obama Yesterday.
She called upon all of us to help our kids.
She asked each of us, by her very presence
at the New Roots Community Garden yesterday
to honor people of all color and all lands
here among us. That is the America that I know,
The America of the Statue of Liberty.
That is still the American Dream--
to create fertile soil where all of us
can be all we can be.
That vision is what our Founding Mothers
and Fathers asked of us many of them
who were eminent gardeners.

Now is the time. This is the week
to reach out and help one another.
This is a week to go beyond living
as an earthquake waiting to happen.
Teamplay. Teamplay. That is what
is asked of us.

This is the First Earth Week in San Diego History.
Volunteer! Help! Give! Support! Forgive!
Be Forgiven! Be Humble:

If you are reading these words now,
you are one of the lucky ones.
Show your gratitude that you can serve
this week. Serve.

Fooling around in the tent where Michelle Obama
greeted the dignitaries. I got in after she left.
These were the men who came to tear down.
We connected. Much to tell.

I came within inches of meeting
First Lady Michelle Obama yesterday.
I ended up standing on the ground
where she and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders
and other dignitaries had stood right before me.

By the end of the day I had a wristband--
the wristband that gave clearance to
stand beside the First Lady.
My timing was a bit off,
or maybe I am intended to stand outside
the gate with all the wonderful people
who I personally gave invites to come
to the 2010 Cultivating Food Justice Conference
next weekend at San Diego State University.

Maybe I am to meet the First Lady
on her turf rather than mine,
my turf here in San Diego.

For months and months
the beet I talk to has been telling
me, we, the beet and I, would met the First Lady.
More than that, Keep The Beet Media Star,
The World's First Talking Beet Plant
has been telling me I would go to the
White House Garden, an organic garden,
where the the Beet, also called
our Nation's Czarina of Foods,
Michelle, and her bed partner would have
some words together over a great meal
served by the White House chefs,
likely Sam Kass among them.

I know I would be comfortable eating
at the White House.

If may be a secret, but I know it.
Organic truckloads of food are already
being delivered to the White House.
I want to be clear about that.
One of the largest distributors UNFI
dropped off a shipment before last year's
Natural Product Expo West in March
and a couple months after the election
of our first President who was once a community organizer
in Chicago. That truckload was three
times larger in weight than the vehicle I drive,
an 68 Love VW, called the Enchanted Garden Mobile.
Let's face it. Whatever you may think
of our president, he is no dummy.
In public he may pay homage to the
Hot Dog and a Diet Coke. He private,
there are other forces in the White House
at work.

These things I see and say.
I know they are not common knowledge.
I admit I am not normal.
These are not normal times.

I admit I have an endearing relationship
with the Vehicle I drive, as well as the
beet plants--growing by three local organic
San Diego Beet Keeper Farmers who have
no competition between them.

Maybe these are days--days of
the first Ever San Diego Earth Week,
that ask each of us to be abnormal.

Volunteer.
Give.
Ask what needs to be done.

See who is working harder that one person
needs to work. Ask if you can help,
be it picking up a bit of trash at the end of the
San Diego EarthFair this Sunday, attending
the Volunteer meeting tonight at 7 PM in the
Veterans Memorial Building in Balboa Park
where Carolyn Chase has asked to put
to welcome 60,000 + this Sunday; and
helping Makeda Dread Cheetom cleanup up the WorldBeat Center area
after Carolyn Chase cleans up the EarthFair.area.

Yes, yes, these are not normal times.
The Earth wants you. Pitch in this week.
There are forces in the Universe watching all of us
to see how we are walking.
How lightly. How care fully.

This week is Earth Week, the first ever in San DIego,
seven full days of activities.
San Diego, we are a military town.
We are a Biotech city.
We are a site of enough local organic
farmers to feed every person in here
and likely in distant states, if that is what
you say is our calling.

San Diego, I love you.
You are a city that has birthed movements, including
the ones called Holistic Health, Integrative Medicine,
and advances in Biotech that have extended the life
of some of my closest of esteemed friends.

This is not a week to have enemies.
This is a week to lay all swords aside.
This is a week for the First Earth Battalion,
that concept taught at the Pentagon
by old friend Jim Channon to become real.

We need the miltary this week in Balboa Park.
We need all off-duty police in Balboa Park
to come and be with us and bring the kids.
We need all Media in Balboa Park-- and throughout
the week--covering our good news.
We need the media at San Diego State University
next weekend--one of the best party schools
in the world as well as research schools.
We haven't had too many good Aztec
football players here since Marshall Fauk,
but I tell you we do know how to play Earth Ball.

Come out. Come out wherever you are!
Join us--each of you for Earth Week.

Come plant seeds with us--beet seeds--
next weekend at our two day
2010 Cultivating Food Justice Conference.
next weekend
April 24-25, 2010.

Rise up now America. Rise up for all
the people who have little voice.
Rise up to in the service
of our beloved earth.

All together now.
We are one beet. We are many Pulses.
